Module description
Qualification goals
Students will be able to weigh up and assess the water management, operational and ecological aspects of dams and hydropower plants. They have in-depth knowledge of the structural design and hydraulic dimensioning, monitoring, renovation and modernization of dams, especially river and reservoir dams. Students are thus able to comprehensively assess the functionality of a dam. Students will be able to classify energy industry terms and topics, determine the potential of renewable energies, use turbine types optimally, dimension run-of-river power plants, optimize the operation of power plant chains and design small hydropower plants. They will be able to evaluate ecological points of conflict and assess plant components and their economic efficiency.

- Construction and operating methods of dams,

- Potentials of renewable energies
- Turbine types and characteristics,
- Run-of-river power plants,
- storage hydropower plants,
- pumped storage power plants,
- small hydropower,
- power plant chains and
- profitability calculations for hydropower plants.

Prerequisites for participation
In the Diploma degree course in Civil Engineering and in the Bachelor's degree course in Civil Engineering, students must have acquired the skills required in the module Fundamentals of Civil Engineering Hydromechanics and in the first semester of the module Fundamentals of Hydraulic Engineering and Hydrology (or the skills required in the module Fundamentals of Hydraulic Engineering and Technical Infrastructure).
Basic and advanced competencies in hydromechanics and hydraulic engineering, such as those acquired in the above-mentioned modules, are required for the Civil Engineering postgraduate degree program.
Applicability
Civil Engineering
In the Civil Engineering degree program, the module is a compulsory module in the specialization Hydraulic Engineering and Environment and a compulsory elective module in all other specializations. The module creates the prerequisites for the modules Selected Chapters in Hydraulic Engineering, Hydromelioration and Groundwater and Watercourse Development.
The module is a compulsory elective module in the Civil Engineering postgraduate degree program. The module creates the prerequisites for the modules Selected Chapters in Hydraulic Engineering, Hydromelioration and Groundwater and Watercourse Development.
The module is a compulsory elective module in the Bachelor's degree program in Civil Engineering.
Prerequisites for the award of credit points:
Civil Engineering
Credit points are awarded if the module examination is passed. The module examination consists of a written examination lasting 120 minutes. A 60-hour exercise is a prerequisite for the examination.
Credit points and grades
8 credit points can be earned through the module.
The module grade corresponds to the grade of the examination.
Frequency of the module
The module is offered every academic year, starting in the winter semester.
Workload
The total workload is 240 hours.
Duration of the module
The module lasts two semesters.
