Enactment of the new doctorate regulations dated 14.09.2023

Please note that our Faculty enacted new doctorate regulations on 14.09.2023.

All future or already accepted doctorates will be carried out according to the new regulations. All doctoral candidates who have already been accepted based on the previous doctorate regulations will remain accepted doctoral candidates of our Faculty.

Solely those doctoral candidates who have already opened their doctorate proceedings can complete the doctorate based on the previous doctorate regulation.

All doctoral candidates who have been accepted but not yet opened their doctorate proceedings need to obey the following changes:

If you hand in an application for the opening of the doctorate proceedings within six months after the official announcement of the new doctoral regulations, you can also apply for your doctorate to be carried out based on the previous doctorate regulations. The doctoral board will decide about the opening of the proceedings as well as the underlying doctorate regulations.

In all other cases, the new doctorate regulations apply.

The doctorate serves as proof of both the special aptitude for independent scientific work and the scientific education in the field of transport and traffic sciences that goes beyond the general study objective.

1. Application requirements

The requirements of the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences for doctorate degree candidates are stated in the § 6 of the doctorate regulations dated 31.05.2015. The minimum requirement for admission is

a) Diplom, Master's or Magister degree at a university or a passed state examination in a course of study relevant to the field of doctoral studies (whereby the respective course of study should at least be completed with the grade "good") or

b) Diplom, Master's or Magister degree at a university or a passed state examination and additionally a positive proof of eligibility

You also need a supervisor (professor or young investigator at the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences) who agrees to take the responsibility for the academic supervision of your doctorate.

2. Application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate and admission

The application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate can be filed with the doctoral board of the Faculty according to § 8 of the doctorate regulations dated 14.09.2023. The doctoral board will verify whether all admission requirements are met. With acceptance as a doctoral candidate, you agree to complete your doctorate at the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences within 3 years.

For the application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate, please use the online system Promovendus.

You can access Promovendus via the internet at any time. You will need a valid ZIH user account to login to Promovendus.

Enrolled students as well as employees of TU Dresden automatically receive ZIH login details. If you have not yet received ZIH login details, you can file an application for a guest login, which your supervisor has to sign. You can find the application for a ZIH user account on the website of the ZIH. Please contact the Service Desk of TU Dresden in case of any questions or problems with the ZIH user account.

Promovendus will generate an application document for you, which you will have to hand in to the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences:

Please note that, together with the application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate, you will need to hand in the following documents:

Certified copy and, if applicable, translation in German or English of the graduation certificate of the study degree relevant for admission
Certified copy and, if applicable, translation in German or English of the overviews of subjects and grades of the study degree relevant for admission
Certified copy and, if applicable, translation in German or English of all other study graduation certificates and overviews of subjects
Simple copy of the university entrance qualification certificates (f.ex. A-levels)
Curriculum vitae (C.V.) including scientific career and signature
Copy of the supervision agreement
Confirmation (receipt) of application for a clearance certificate (Führungszeugnis) to be sent to the Faculty in compliance with Section 30 Paragraph 5 "Bundeszentralregistergesetz” (Federal Central Register Law)

3. Certified copies and verification of equivalence of foreign university degrees

For the acceptance as a doctoral candidate, you need to hand in certified copies and, if applicable, certified translations of your graduation certificates and subject and grades overview. You can find further information on certified copies of certificates, which have not been issued by TU Dresden on the website of the office of certified documentation of TU Dresden.

If you completed one of your studies outside Germany or if you have a foreign citizenship, your documents will be sent to the International Office of the TU Dresden to verify the equivalence of your degree. You can use the online database www.anabin.de for a preliminary check of the equivalence of your degree.

4. Enrolment

You can only enroll as PhD student if the doctoral board of the Faculty has accepted you as doctoral candidate and put you on the doctoral list of the Faculty. You can find further information on the website of the admission office.

5. Additional requirements

Acceptance as a doctoral candidate can be combined with additional requirements and the completion of additional tests. The doctoral board will define these requirements and inform the doctoral candidate together with the confirmation of acceptance.

6. Opening of the doctorate proceedings

For the application for opening of the doctorate proceedings, please use the online system Promovendus.

4 hard cover copies of the dissertation as well as one digital copy (as pdf file on CD)
15 short versions of the dissertation as well as one digital copy (as pdf file on CD)
Curriculum vitae (C.V.) including scientific career and signature
List of scientific publications
Proof of the fulfillment of additional requirements set upon acceptance as a doctoral candidate, if applicable
Confirmation of at least 2 presentations of your own scientific work at graduate events of the TU Dresden or equivalent scientific events; whereof at least one must be open to scientists outside the TU Dresden
Confirmation (receipt) of application for a clearance certificate (Führungszeugnis) to be sent to the Faculty in compliance with Section 30 Paragraph 5 "Bundeszentralregistergesetz” (Federal Central Register Law)

The dissertation as well as the disputation (defense of PhD thesis) can be in the German or English language. You can find all further details in the doctorate regulations dated 31.01.2015.

7. Clearance Certificate

For application of acceptance as a doctoral candidate as well as the opening of the doctorate procedures, you will need a confirmation (receipt) of application for a clearance certificate (“Führungszeugnis”) to be sent to the Faculty of Computer Science in compliance with Section 30 Paragraph 5 “Bundeszentralregistergesetz” (Federal Central Register Law).

The clearance certificate is valid for about 3 months and can be requested on the day that the application for acceptance as a doctorate candidate or opening of the doctorate proceedings is submitted.

When requesting this certificate (for example at the records department, Theaterstraße 11, 01067 Dresden) the following address should be given:

8. Completed doctorates and alumni network

You can register for the alumni network for former junior researchers in Promovendus. If you do not have a valid ZIH user account, you can also use the alumni sheet. Registration is voluntary.
