In dem Verbundprojekt wird ein Modell für die sachsenweite Kooperation der Hochschulen im Bereich der online vermittelten Weiterbildung geschaffen. Ziel ist die inhaltliche Vernetzung der Weiterbildungs- und Kompetenzzentren sächsischer Hochschulen. In diesem Rahmen sollen schon vorhandene und noch zu entwickelnde Online-Weiterbildungsangebote in einem gemeinsamen Curriculum zur Förderung der Schlüsselqualifikation Medienkompetenz zusammengeführt und als "Sächsisches Online-Bildungsangebot Medienkompetenz" (somek) angeboten werden.
LehrerInnen sind die exemplarische Zielgruppe des Modellangebotes. Darüber hinaus ist angestrebt die Angebote anderen Berufstätigen aus dem Medienbereich verfügbar zu machen. Neben dem Einsatz in der wissenschaftlichen Weiterbildung ist ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Austausch und Einsatz der Angebote in der regulären Hochschulausbildung. Für den gezielten Einsatz der Weiterbildungsangebote wird das Curriculum mit der Lehrerfortbildung des Landes Sachsen abgestimmt.
Die entstehende Verzahnung der Hochschulen und ihrer Einrichtungen führt dazu, dass die Hochschulen und ihre Weiterbildungseinrichtungen sowohl als Anbieter als auch als Nutzer von Weiterbildungsangeboten auftreten und so ein System der Zertifizierung und gegenseitigen Anerkennung von Leistungen entsteht. Dabei wird auf vorhandene Strukturen zurückgegriffen.
