Call on neurodegenerative diseases - reference to health and social care
The EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND) will shortly launch a multinational call for research proposals on: Health and social care research with a focus on the moderate and late stages of neurodegenerative diseases.
Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s, are incurable, progressive conditions with major personal, societal and economic impacts. Despite research efforts, there are few effective treatments, and the economic burden of caring for those affected is enormous. Current medical and social interventions mainly focus on the early stages, but research into care for more advanced stages is limited. As the disease progresses, patients struggle with daily life, which impacts their independence, social inclusion and dignity, often worsening physical and mental symptoms. A deeper understanding of factors affecting quality of life is essential for healthcare systems to better meet the needs of both patients and caregivers. Since access to support varies across Europe and beyond, evidence-based solutions can improve coordination between health and social care systems. Identifying the challenges faced by patients, caregivers, and families requires a thorough analysis of existing services and the social factors influencing cognitive decline. This will help develop new strategies to improve health and social care for those affected.
For this reason, JPND will be launching this joint transnational call with the aim of improving the understanding of factors that impact the quality of life of patients and their families and to develop more adequate concepts of easily accessible support for people with neurodegenerative diseases at moderate, advanced and end of life stages.
Proposals to this call must be ambitious, innovative, multi-disciplinary and multi-national, i.e. include research teams from at least three different countries. They must be hypothesis driven and should have a strong focus on methodology.
