PIANOFORTE Open Call 2023 is now open!
The European Partnership for Radiation Protection Research (acronym: PIANOFORTE) aims to improve knowledge and promote innovation in the field of radiation protection for the benefit of better protection of the public, patients, workers and the environment in all scenarios of exposure to ionizing radiation.
PIANOFORTE is launching the first transnational Open Call 2023 for Proposals to support innovative research projects in radioprotection. The aims of the call are:
- To support transnational research projects that combine innovative approaches in the field of radiation protection;
- To actively integrate Education&Training activities and collaboration with universities in multidisciplinary research projects;
- To make optimal use of research infrastructures.
This call will address three main topics and the project proposals must fall within one of them:
Topic 1
Developing a knowledge base for a better understanding of disease pathogenesis of ionising radiation-induced cancer to improve risk assessment.
Topic 2
Individualised diagnostic as well as therapeutic procedures with regard to optimisation of the benefit/risk ratio.
Topic 3
Development of risk assessment and risk management approaches and technological capabilities to cope with scenarios arising from threats due to war or armed conflicts situations or natural disasters taking into consideration social, ethical and legal issues.
Proposals must clearly demonstrate the potential impact on radiation protection in Europe as well as the added value of transnational collaboration.
Additionally, each proposal should consider, where appropriate, the following aspects:
- Stakeholders
- Education and Training
- Quality assurance, Open Access and Infrastructures
- Social science and Humanities
- Communication
- Links with international initiatives
Timeline and eligibility criteria:
- July 12th, 2023 – proposal submission
- funding for joint projects with min. three partners from three eligible countries (min. one "third party"!)

max. 48 months project duration
- 63 % funding à SMWK - increase to 100 %
- expected project volume: 1 - 1,5 million Euros

- max. EUR 300,000 project costs for third parties
- participating institutions need a gender equality plan
Participating countries:
Each of the countries must be established in a EU Member State or Euratom Programme associated country.
