On 12.12.2024, the second event in the "AI in School & University" series, organized by stakeholders from the BQL programme and Schullogin, took place on the topic of AI in teacher training . Here, the focus was on teaching and research at TU Dresden. Julian Kriegel from the Chair of Primary Education / Mathematical Education presented research approaches to support mathematics teaching with AI tools. He focused on two main topics:
1. lesson preparation: Julian Kriegel presented the AI agents presented at Teachermania 2024, which can help teachers to create high-quality tasks. These AI agents take four different perspectives on the development of mathematics tasks (content orientation, language sensitivity, differentiation, competence orientation). The research team investigated how these agents can be used in the revision of mathematics tasks. Teachers were then asked how they rated the newly generated AI tasks compared to the original tasks, without knowing which tasks had been modified by the AI.
2. lesson implementation: Initial findings from a pilot project show how primary school children interested in mathematics use an AI chatbot to solve problems. It was investigated at which points in the solution process and for what purpose the children used the AI chatbot. The presentation demonstrated how the children used the AI chatbot both as a calculation aid and to find solutions.
Finally, Julian Kriegel emphasized the importance of integrating prompting techniques into (mathematics) lessons, for example to support problem solving in a profitable way. He also called for a subject-specific examination of the topic of AI.

Another speaker invited to the event was Dr. Matthias Ritter(Chair of Education / Inclusive Education), who presented an innovative teaching-learning scenario for dealing with AI technologies in the context of teacher training.
The event concluded with a joint discussion between the participants on the possible effects of current AI developments on university teaching and the associated didactic consequences for teacher training.

Information on the event series
The event "AI in Teacher Education" was the second part of the four-part event series "AI in Schools & Universities" organized by the ZLSB. This started in November 2024 with the topic "AI in (school) education".
The event series is organized and carried out by Stephanie Richter(BQL Deutsch), Dr. Anja Mede-Schelenz(BQL Grundschule), Dagmar Oertel(BQL.Digital) and Fritz Hoffmann(Schullogin). In November 2023, the team was awarded the Teaching Prize of the Society of Friends and Supporters of TU Dresden e. V. for the workshop series "How artificial intelligence could positively change the school of tomorrow - opportunities, challenges, risks". This gave rise to the desire to continue actively pursuing the topic of AI in schools and universities. This gave rise to the idea of organizing a series of events to facilitate exchange and networking on the topic. The aim of the series of events is to discuss specific effects on the school and university sectors and to give participants the opportunity to engage intensively with the opportunities and challenges of AI in education.
