Psychosocial counseling services for all

"But I'm not crazy! ..."
In the case of physical complaints and problems, it is a matter of course to "go to the doctor". Mental stress, on the other hand, is still taboo. This is slowly changing, but the misconception that anyone who cannot "cope" mentally is weak is still all too widespread - this does not fit in with the meritocracy.
For various reasons, working at a university - whether as a student or as an employee - is full of stressors that can make work and private life more difficult.
"Help is possible!"
Psychotherapeutic support as well as low-threshold psychosocial counseling services are so effective these days that, with professional support, it is possible to find a way out of crises. You should claim this for yourself, but it is also important to keep an eye open for "those close to you", to be sensitive and to address the issue with respect for boundaries.
"I don't really have anything! ..."
The prognosis for treatment and advice is best when problems are recognized early and "tackled". The coronavirus pandemic and other macro-social stressors such as the wars in Ukraine, the Middle East and other regions or the long arm of the climate crisis have made the situation even more difficult. For many of us, professional uncertainty about the future is also a tangible burden, even a threat.
Typical causes of disruption and suffering are, for example
- Conflicts at work, bullying
- Overwork (and also underwork)
- Self-doubt, gratification crises, anxiety
- Depressive symptoms (lack of drive, brooding, feelings of powerlessness)
- Inability to recover
- Addiction disorders of any kind
- Discrimination of any kind (ethnic, linguistic, gender-related, due to impairments, ableism, lookism ...)
- Sexually motivated violence and discrimination
- Uncertainty in dealing with mentally distressed fellow students or colleagues
The topics mentioned are within the field of expertise of professional psychologists with therapy training. However, there are also a number of low-threshold counseling services. In addition, everyone, without exception, should keep an eye on the worries and needs of our fellow human beings. There is no reason not to address this - while respecting the boundaries of the other person - but there are many reasons to do so.
