Slavic linguistics deals with the linguistic history of the Slavic languages (especially East and West Slavic) and with the contemporary languages in their systems and usage. The focus is on both historical and contemporary communicative varieties in social and communicative contexts: e.g. in political, religious or economic discourse, in conflict communication or in the relationship between majority and minor languages. Semantics (theory of meaning) and pragmatics (language in communicative behaviour) form the theoretical basis. The term cultural linguistics refers to linguistic studies of language use in historical, ethnic or national and discursive contexts.
The Bachelor's degree programme therefore comprises three consecutive modules on systemic and historical linguistics (Old Slavic) and cultural linguistics. The Master's programme focuses on cultural linguistics.
Linguistics in Dresden has strong international links, including with universities in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Minsk, Prague, Kazan', Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan), Edmonton (Canada) and Sanya (China). The semester programme is regularly supplemented by guest lectures.
