Functionalization
For the integration of spinodoid structures into future technical applications, graded functionalization is investigated in project group F (functionalization). Guided by numerical analyses from the atomistic to the mesoscale level, functionalized metamaterials with as-designed haptic and tribological structural properties, which are of particular interest for, e.g., individualized medical products, are developed and characterized. In close collaboration with fellows from project group D, descriptors for metal-polymer interfaces are identified. Cross-scale simulation, implemented by a sequence of computations ranging from electronic structure calculations to classical atomistic and continuum simulations, provide knowledge on how the bonding at surfaces and interfaces of polymer-coated metallic spinodoid structures differs from the corresponding ideal bulk materials. Based on this knowledge, comprehensive designs and associated technologies are developed to effectively bond the metallic structure with specific types of functional polymers.
