Portrait of Professor Beckmann
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Beckmann was elected Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering in January 2020. He was previously Vice-Dean. He has held the Chair of Combustion, Mass and Heat Transfer since November 2007. In July 2015, this professorship was renamed the Chair of Energy Process Engineering. Prof. Beckmann has also been Director of the Institute of Process Engineering and Environmental Technology since August 2015. He is head and member of several expert committees at the VDI and DECHEMA as well as an advisory board member of numerous scientific institutions.
Without combustion, mass and heat transfer... the sun, wind, water and fire would still supply us with energy - but we can understand and use many processes with just a few basic principles of thermodynamics.
For me, being a professor... means repeatedly inspiring and encouraging young people in particular to use their abilities to think and examine facts and opinions and to stand up for the knowledge they have gained in the process.
With their curiosity and their questions, students ... always make me look for solutions and explanations.
In the future... we will have to work more on the goal of conserving resources and thus be able to continue researching the development of new materials, processes and products.
If I could study again ... I would certainly be faced with the decision between physics and energy technology again...
Excellence ... is the persistent striving to recognize the unknown, to improve the existing, to achieve the impossible and to remain human.
