Profile
The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering was the nucleus in the formative stage of Technische Universität Dresden. Today, with almost 3,500 students, is now one of the university’s largest faculties. Almost €70m in third-party funding per year testify to the strength of the faculty's research. More than 1,000 employees work at 13 institutes, including around 50 professors and more than 600 third-party funding staff. Interdisciplinarity is of great importance at the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering, which is evident in our broad range of degree programmes and our diverse research projects.
Degree Programmes Offered
The faculty offers an extensive range of degree programmes - Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering and Natural Materials Technology, Materials Science, Textile and Ready-Made Clothing Technology as well as Mechatronics and Renewable Energy Systems. As part of the Bologna reform, all diploma degree programmes were modularised and the grading was converted to the credit point system - guaranteeing international comparability. Nevertheless, TU Dresden is one of few German universities that continue to offer an internationally recognised Diplom degree in Engineering.
Research
Our faculty drives technological progress. Regardless if it concerns products, components, facilities, materials, manufacturing processes, technologies, systems or software: Engineers have a significant influence on the value-added chain, which extends from the generation of ideas to conception, construction and implementation. Research activities at the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering focus on the following topics: energy storage, design, industry 4.0, robotics, materials, light/textile materials and aerospace. Collaborations with non-university research institutions are close and fruitful. Cooperation with the Helmholtz Centres as well as the Fraunhofer and Leibniz Institutes is vital and also makes it easier for students to gain access to interesting industrial and research internships as well as subject-related student jobs.
The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering has once again been awarded the seal of approval by the Faculty of Mechanical and Process Engineering Association FTMV (Fakultätentages Maschinenbau und Verfahrenstechnik e.V.). Once again, the faculty was convincing during the voluntary evaluation process and was able to meet the quality requirements in the criteria of research, teaching and organization. The FTMV awarded the seal of approval for the period 2024-2026.
