FSR Trip Inclusion
With the help of the equality funds of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department, it was possible to financially support an excursion of the Biology Student Council on the topic of inclusion, which took place from 16.12.2022 to 18.12.2022 in the Hostel Osterzgebirge in Geising.
The excursion started with a hike through the snow-covered Ore Mountains, during which the participants discussed the so-called "equality paradox" after a short introduction to the topic. This phenomenon describes the fact that in countries with a high degree of equality, gender-related differences in study and career choices increase. In other words, the higher the level of gender equality - the lower the proportion of women in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
Furthermore, a seminar on the topic of "Studying with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses" took place, where the participants could interactively research and contribute their own thoughts during the lecture. At the end, a case study was discussed in more detail. The topic met with great interest and afterwards possible future projects such as a simulation game on accessibility on campus and in the Bio-Bau were discussed. In addition, ideas for barrier-free design of courses were discussed.
The excursion not only gave the student council the opportunity to deal with the topic of inclusion and equality, but also to get to know each other. Existing members were able to present their respective committee tasks to the group in presentations and it was discussed how the various positions could work together better in the future.
