Prof. Dr. Reinhard Genzel is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching, Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Professor at the Graduate School for Physics and Astronomy at the University of California in Berkeley. He is one of the world's leading researchers in the field of infrared and submillimeter astronomy. His research focuses on experimental astrophysics, black holes, galactic nuclei, galaxy evolution, star formation and extragalactic astrophysics. In 2020, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, together with the US astronomer Andrea Ghez, for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way.

Galaxien und Schwarze Löcher (Galaxies and black holes)

At the center of the Milky Way sits an extraordinarily compact object that astronomers call Sagittarius A*. Based on the predictions of Einstein's theory of general relativity, it has been suspected for 50 years that SgrA* could be a supermassive black hole. To investigate this hypothesis, Reinhard Genzel and his team have been on the trail of this mass monster for forty years. Using high-precision measurements of stellar motions around SgrA* and of bursts of hot gas from the immediate vicinity of SgrA*, Genzel and a second group led by Andrea Ghez in California have convincingly shown that SgrA* really must be a black hole with a mass of 4 million solar masses. It is now even possible to measure characteristic effects of the general theory of relativity, such as the gravitational redshift of light or the orbital precession of a passing star, for the first time in such an extreme environment. At the same time, it has become clear that most galaxies are home to massive black holes and that these black holes must have formed around a billion years after the Big Bang. Together with Roger Penrose and Andrea Ghez, Reinhard Genzel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2020.

Anne L'Huillier is a Swedish/French researcher in attosecond science. During the first part of her career, she worked at the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique, in Saclay, France, first as a PhD student until 1986, then as a permanent researcher until 1995. She was postdoc at Chalmers Institute of Technology, Gothenburg. Sweden in 1986, and at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA in 1988. In 1995, she moved to Lund University, Sweden and became full professor in 1997. Her research, both theoretical and experimental, is centered around high-order harmonic generation in gases and its applications, in particular in attosecond science. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 2023 together with Pierre Agostini and Ferenc Krausz for “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter”.

Abstract: Attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics

When an intense laser interacts with a gas of atoms, high-order harmonics are generated. In the time domain, this radiation forms a train of extremely short light pulses, of the order of 100 attoseconds. Attosecond pulses allow the study of the dynamics of electrons in atoms and molecules, using pump-probe techniques. This presentation will highlight some of the key steps of the field of attosecond science.

Prof Didier Queloz, FRS, is Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy at Cambridge Cavendish Laboratory and part-time professor of physics at ETH- Zurich.
He was born in Switzerland in 1966.
He is at the origin of the ‘exoplanet revolution’ in astrophysics when in 1995 during his PhD with his supervisor they announced the first discovery of a giant planet orbiting another star, outside the solar system. They received the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics for this spectacular discovery that kick-started the rise of exoplanet researches.
Over the next 25 years, Didier Queloz scientific contributions have been to make progress in detection and measurement of exoplanet systems with the goal to retrieve information on their physical structure to better understand their formation and evolution and to compare with our Solar System. He participated and conducted various programs leading to the detection of hundred planets, include many breakthrough results.
More recently, his activity has focused on the detection of Earth like planets, establishing a comprehensive research program with the goal of making further progress in our understanding of habitability of exoplanets and life in the Universe. He is the funding director of the new Leverhulme Centre for Life in the Universe at Cambridge and of the new Centre for Origin and Life in the Universe at ETH-Z, Switzerland .
In addition to his research and teaching activities, he participates to numerous documentaries movies, articles TV and radio interviews to share excitement and to promote interest for science in general and particularly topics about exoplanets and life in the Universe.

Public lecture: The Exoplanet revolution

The wealth and diversity of planetary systems that have now been detected modified our perspective on planet formation as a whole and more specifically our place in the Universe. It also  present an opportunity of historical perspectives and an irresistible call to look for signs of life on these new worlds as a way to explore our own origins.  I will introduce the audience with the challenges and recent progresses in this new field of research and will  touch upon the emergence of a new paradigm for the origins of life on Earth. In his lecture "Invention of blue LED and future solid state lighting", Nakamura spoke about how he, Akasaki and Amano achieved a breakthrough in developping the first blue LED. The development of blue LEDs was the prerequisite for the production of white light using the combination of red, green and blue LEDs and thus, the basis for efficient, energy-saving light sources.

Stefan Hell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014 "for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy". He shares the prize with his American colleagues Eric Betzig and William E. Moerner. The German physicist Hell has succeeded in exceeding the limitations of optical microscopy and thus, in laying foundations for optical nanoscopy. Learn more

The German physicist and chemist Gerhard Ertl was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2007 “for his studies of chemical processes on solid surfaces”. With his work, Gerhard Ertl, the Emeritus director of the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin, created the basis for the understanding of industrial catalysts and catalytic processes. In his talk "Somatic cell nuclear transfer: memory of the past versus hope for the future", Gurdon spoke about his pioneering study in which he found the prove that the mature cell, just as embryonic stem cells, still contain the genetic information needed to form all types of cells.

In his lecture "Mechanisms in DNA mismatch repair", Modrich told how he has worked over decades on the idea of decoding the repair mechanism in the DNA code. Just as with all cell mechanisms, chromosome replication is not free from mistakes, misspellings in the genetic code are constantly happening. In 1989, Modrich succeeded in identifying the mismatch repair system (MMR) in cells.

Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard is a German developmental biologist and geneticist. She was the first German woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1995 for the discovery concerning the genetic control of early embryonic development. She shares the prize with her colleague Eric F. Wieschaus and the US-American geneticist Edward B. Lewis. Learn more

Fish have particularly beautiful and diverse color patterns, which are created by the mosaic-like distribution of differently colored pigment cells. In her lecture "The stripes of the zebrafish: Why and how does beauty arise in animals?", Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard talked about how these patterns are formed and which genes are responsible for the diversity and evolution of color patterns.

The Canadian particle physicist Arthur B. McDonald was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 2015 together with Takaaki Kajita from Japan. Both researchers succeeded in proving that neutrinos have mass, a fact contradictory to the Standard Model of Elementary Particle Physics. Learn more

In his lecture "A Deeper Understanding of our Universe from 2 km Underground", McDonald took the Dresden public in his underground lab, where is team in 2001 succeeded in proving that neutrinos have a mass - a break-through in neutrino research and in our understanding of the universe.

Klaus von Klitzing was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1985 for the discovery of the quantum Hall effect. This states that at low temperatures and strong magnetic fields, a Hall voltage occurs in a current-carrying semiconductor structure that changes in steps - according to what is now known as the "von Klitzing constant". In his lecture "A new kilogram next year and what it has to do with my Nobel Prize", von Klitzing explained how the International System of Units is to be revolutionised with the help of natural constants. Until now, the unit "kilogramme" was defined by a material prototype - the original kilogramme - which becomes smaller and smaller over time despite elaborate mechanical protection devices.

In his lecture "The Art of Building Small", Feringa explained how motors can be made from molecules. In 1999, he and his team built the first light-powered micro-car from a few molecules. The molecular motors can be used in the human body, for example in the construction of muscle elements or micromachines - as well as a means of transport for medicine.

Since the 1980s, Thomas Südhof has been working on the question of how brain cells communicate with each other. In 2013, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Randy W. Schekman and James E. Rothman for his discoveries of mechanisms regulating vesicular traffic. The Japanese physicist Takaaki Kajita,is known for neutrino experiments at the Kamioka Observatory – Kamiokande and its successor, Super-Kamiokande. In 2015, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Canadian physicist Arthur B. McDonald “for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass”. Learn more

"A Random Walk to Graphene" was the title of his lecture, during which Geim revealed much about his scientific curiosity to the Dresden public. For his experiments on diamagnetic levitation, which produced the so-called "levitating frog", he was awarded the Ig Nobel Prize of the year 2000, making him the only person to be both a Nobel and Ig Nobel Prize winner.

Gregory Winter is a British molecular biologist who in 2018, together with George P. Smith, received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of phage display of peptides and antibodies. Winter used this technique to develop antibody drugs on a purely human basis for the first time, which can be used to target specific diseases. Learn more

In 2018, Donna Strickland became the third woman ever, after the German-American Maria Goeppert-Mayer and Marie Curie, to be honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1985, as a doctoral student at the University of Rochester, Strickland and her supervisor, Gérard Mourou, developed a method for generating ultrashort laser pulses: the so-called chirped pulse amplification (CPA). In 2003, Ben List moved to the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim/Ruhr as head of a research group and became one of the directors there in 2005. He still holds this position today. He has been awarded dozens of prestigious prizes in the field of chemistry. In 2021, he received the Nobel Prize for his work on asymmetric organocatalysis. Learn more

With his group at the Max-Planck-Insitut für Kohlenforschung, Chemistry Nobel Prize Laurates Benjamin List aims towards the invention of new strategies for the development of “perfect chemical reactions”. For him, the science of catalysis is truly fascinating. In his talk, List spoke about the catalysis with organic molecules and how strong and confined acids could become universal catalysts.
