Bühler-KolloquiumM. Fischer: Psychopathology in a relationship context: Couple-based treatments and translational research
Philipps-Universität Marburg
Abstract
Psychopathology does not exist in a vacuum – instead, close relationships can influence the course and treatment of many psychological disorders. Couple interaction processes and partner responses to a psychological disorder can inadvertently contribute to the maintenance of symptoms. At the same time, couple relationships have the potential to serve as a major resource in recovery, particularly if treatments intervene on relevant interpersonal maintenance factors. This talk will highlight the rationale and evidence base for psychological treatments that systematically involve partners from a cognitive-behavioral perspective and will discuss how basic research on relevant relationship processes can continue to inform our understanding of how psychopathology is maintained and treated.
