General information for the course
Media Research provides students with a fundamental knowledge of communication sciences and methodological skills. Moreover, it prepares students for careers in media and communications. This applies in particular to the production, reception, and impact of mass media and digital content.
Studies in Media Research focus on the fundamentals of communication and media science with concentrations in science communication, technology communication, and political communication. The program enables students to act responsibly in corresponding fields of activity. They learn to recognize questions and problems in communication and media science, to analyze them appropriately and critically using scientific methods, and to find and weigh up possible solutions. In addition, students acquire the necessary prerequisites for enrolling in a corresponding Master’s degree program.
Study contents
The core content of Media Research includes the fundamentals of communication research, the structure and organization of media, and the essential methods of media research. In addition to the fundamentals of media impact research and journalism research, students learn about the origins, structure and function of the media system, as well as theories and the state of research on public opinion. Studies in this subject area also include political communication, science communication, technology communication, and business communication, as well as the in-depth study of special research methods, and the fundamentals of media practice. The program enables students to act responsibly in corresponding fields of activity. They learn to recognize questions and problems in communication and media science, to analyze them appropriately and critically using scientific methods, and to find and weigh up possible solutions.
