Electrical devices in the office

• Pay attention to energy consumption when purchasing new equipment
• Take little-used, obsolete devices out of service
• Use energy-saving functions on PCs and other devices (energy-saving mode, hibernation mode)
• Only switch on devices shortly before use and switch them off when finished or when taking longer breaks; avoid relying on standby mode
• Use remote access, e.g. via wake-on-LAN

IT peripherals

• Reduce the number of devices in use
• Use centralized printers, copiers and servers

Lighting

• Rely on natural light whenever possible
• Turn off lights during long breaks and at the end of your workday

Coffeemakers and kettles

• Use an insulated coffee pot instead of keeping hotplates on
• Only heat the amount of water you need and be sure to descale kettles occasionally

Kitchen refrigerators

• Ensure that doors are closed tightly and defrost frequently
• Keep the temperature at 8°C
• Wait until leftovers have cooled down before placing them in the fridge

Elevators

• Take stairs instead of elevators whenever possible.

Common areas and classrooms

• Be sure to turn off heating, ventilation, lights, projectors and other devices when you leave the room.

Room temperature control

• Do not keep windows permanently tilted; instead, open the window fully to ventilate quickly and briefly before closing it again
• Reducing the heating temperature by 1 degree, e.g. from 21 to 20°C, conserves energy by approx. 6% 
• Do not cover or block heaters

Print only what’s necessary

• Consider whether you really need to print a document. Paper production and printing are high-energy processes.
• If you need to print something, try to use recycled paper if possible.
