Sharpening the eye for urban nature - Inventory of campus flora and fauna
In mid-May, a group of nature enthusiasts, led by master's student Nicole Rüsing, began mapping plants and animals on the TUD campus. This campus inventory is expected to continue through autumn and provides a first in-depth look at the biodiversity on campus. "In winter, I would like to present the results in a campus brochure," Nicole Rüsing reports. The fact that her group of nature enthusiasts is learning a lot about how to systematically record plants and animals in a habitat is a welcomed side effect fo the project.
Nicole Rüsing's group currently consists of seven people. Most of them are studying biology or work at the TUD's Biology department. But students from business administration and landscape planning are also part of the group. "The mappings are open to anyone interested - you don't need to have any prior knowledge", Nicole Rüsing says. In the long term, she wants the participants to get an overview of urban nature and to foster the commitment to protect biodiversity.
