Welcome to TUD Dresden University of Technology's Journey of Excellence. TUD has been one of the German Universities of Excellence since 2012 and has achieved remarkable progress and success during this time. 2025
- Approval of five Clusters of Excellence for TU Dresden
- CARE: Climate-Neutral and Resource-Efficient Construction (TUD with RWTH Aachen University)
- CeTI: Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop
- ctd.qmat: Complexity, Topology and Dynamics in Quantum Matter (TUD with Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg)
- PoL: Physics of Life. The Dynamic Organization of Living Matter
- REC2: Responsible Electronics in the Climate-Change Era
2024
- Submission of three new Cluster of Excellence proposals and three renewal proposals
- TUD and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) establish transCampus partnership
- TUD participates in new high-tech accelerator “ExciteLab” to promote start-ups and spin-offs
2023
- TUD establishes Excellence Center for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship (TUD|excite) and appoints of Prof. Andreas Pinkwart as its founding director
- Strategic partnership agreements concluded with leading universities in Taiwan
- Prof. Dirk Brockmann appointed Founding Director of the new Synergy of Systems (SynoSys) Chair at CIDS
2022
- Anniversary: TUD celebrates 10 years of Excellence
- TUD participates in the acquisition of two major research centers in Lusatia and Central German coal mining region
- Successful expansion of research-oriented teaching
2021
- Center for Interdisciplinary Digital Sciences (CIDS) founded as a Central Academic Unit of TUD
- TUD joins EUTOPIA European University Alliance
- Key Chairs appointed to the Emerging Fields “Automated and Networked Mobility” and “Societal Change”
2020
- TUD establishes and appoints the Vice-Rectorate University Culture
- 10 year anniversary of the DRESDEN-concept research alliance and further development into the DRESDEN-concept Science and Innovation Campus
- Center for Information Services and High Performance Computing (ZIH) takes on core position in new Center for Interdisciplinary Digital Sciences (CIDS) as one of eight German centers for national high-performance computing
2019
- Decision: TU Dresden defends its Excellence status
- DRESDEN-concept expanded to include 28 partner institutions and further development of the Dresden Technology Portal
2018
- Approval of three Clusters of Excellence for TU Dresden
Funding for the Clusters of Excellence Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop (CeTI), Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter (ct.qmat) and Physics of Life (POL)
2017
- 17 open topic postdoc positions are filled
- TUD expands strategic university partnerships with King’s College London and TU Delft
2016
- Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB) founded as an umbrella organization for the three Institutes B CUBE, BIOTEC and the Cluster of Excellence Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD)
2014
- Ceremony to mark the opening of the Graduate Academy
- SprInt program established for the linguistic and intercultural qualification of non-scientific staff
- TUD establishes Centre for Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching (ZiLL)
2013
- TUD tenders call for Open Topic Tenure-Track Professorships
- TUD appoints Project Scouts team to develop competitive third-party funding applications
2012
- Launching of new School structure: 18 faculties divided into five Schools
- TUD becomesUniversity of Excellence

- Approved in the first round of the Excellence Initiative: Graduate School Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS-BB) and Cluster of Excellence From Cells to Tissues to Therapies: Engineering the Cellular Basis of Regeneration (CRTD)
