The Hubert Engels Laboratory
The origins of today's Hubert Engels Laboratory date back to the hydraulic engineering laboratory founded in Dresden by Hubert Engels in 1898, the first permanent river engineering laboratory in the world. Today, the laboratory includes the hydraulic engineering hall put into operation in 2015, the laboratory rooms located in the Beyer building since 1913, and a field testing facility on the Wilde Weißeritz river.
Areas of activity
The Hubert Engels Laboratory (history of the laboratory) enables physical model tests for research and teaching at a wide range of technical scales. Moreover, the lab facilitates teaching by providing the opportunity for demonstrations and presentations. These include:
-
Tests for special hydraulic structures, for sanitary, industrial and power engineering as well as for lake, river and harbour construction, water treatment and water distribution or for hydraulic problems in industrial plants under laboratory and field conditions,
-
Pressure, velocity, turbulence and flow measurements,
-
Ethohydraulic tests with live animals,
-
Basic analyses and presentation of hydraulic phenomena in hydraulic engineering and technical hydromechanics,
-
Laboratory trainings and semester papers,
-
Model tests for graduation theses,
-
Supervision of pupils, students and doctoral students.
