Structure and Course of Studies

The Diplom program in Business Information Systems (BIS) has a total workload of 300 credit points (CP). For full-time study, the standard study period is 10 semesters. Flexible part-time study is equally possible. Please find out more on our website Part-Time Study.

The BIS Diplom program divides itself into

• the Basic Studies, addressing the fundamentals of the various disciplines, and the subsequent
• Main Course of Study, featuring an ample elective area and the Diplom Thesis.
   

Basic Studies

Comprising the first four semesters, basic studies (120 CP) impart the fundamentals in the various fields involved:

• Business Information Systems,
• Computer Science,
• Business Administration and Economics,
• Methods and Procedures, and
• General Qualifications.

Main Course of Study

The main course of study (180 CP) covers the subsequent 6 semesters. Interdisciplinary in nature, it offers a broad-based in-depth education in business information systems, computer science, business administration, economics, and more.

You may enter the main course of study before your basic studies are completed provided you have passed the Core Compulsory Modules of the basic studies.

Compulsory Area

The small compulsory area in the main course of study (20 CP) comprises an internship and a research assignment (Belegarbeit).

The internship ensures you link the theoretical knowledge from your studies to professional practice. The research assignment conducts a BIS project to introduce you to research.

Elective Area

With 140 CP, the elective area is much more extensive. Thanks to its open structure, it offers plenty of opportunities to specialize in the topics you are interested in.

You dispose of modules from the following fields, for which you only have to adhere to the respective point limits:

• at least 40 CP in Business Information Systems,
• at least 40 CP in Computer Science,
• at least 10 CP in Business Administration and Economics,
• at least 15 CP in Methods and Procedures,
• at least 5 CP in Presenting and Discussing,
• 10 CP in Research Design, and
• at most 20 CP in Supplementary Qualifications.

The fields, foremost Business Information Systems, Computer Science, and Business Administration and Economics, contain various profiles to focus and specialize your studies. Consider the website Elective Area to find out which modules and profiles are available and how to select them.

Diplom Thesis

With the Diplom Thesis, you demonstrate your skills in working independently on a BIS-related research question using scientific methods. The Diplom Thesis takes 16 weeks and earns 20 CP. It typically marks the end of your studies.

You will attend modules from the Research Design field for methodological and thematic support. There, you will learn relevant research methods and can present and discuss interim results of your Diplom Thesis.

To start with the Diplom Thesis, you must have passed the basic studies and have acquired at least 120 CP in the main course of study, including at least 5 CP from the field Presenting and Discussing.  Also, you must begin no later than the semester after completing the last module.

The Chairs of the Faculty have different regulations on topic assignment, registration and (formal) requirements for the thesis. Please inform yourself on our website Theses at the Chair of your choice!
