The Diplom Program Business Information Systems contains a basic and a main course of study and concludes with the Diplom Thesis. The total workload is 300 credit points. A full-time study should result in 30 credit points per semester, hence the standard study period is 10 semesters.

You may study the program also on a flexible part-time basis. In this case, 15 credit points should be reached per semester, and the standard period of study changes accordingly. Find more detailed information at the regulations for part-time studies at the TU Dresden (in German only).

Basic Studies

Comprising the first four semesters, basic studies (120 credit points) impart the  fundamentals in the various fields involved.

You acquire basic knowledge in Business Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration, and Economics. This is complemented by Mathematics, Statistics, Quantitative Methods, Law and the module Scientific and Practical Work, which teaches  key qualifications.

Main Course of Study

The main course of study (180 credit points) covers the subsequent 6 semesters. Interdisciplinary in nature, it offers a broad-based in-depth education in business information systems, computer science, business administration, economics, and more.

Entering the main course of study is possible only once you have passed the core modules of the basic studies. See the German version of this website for their list!

The following excerpt from the study plan shows the essential elements of the main course of study. There is a compulsory area (in yellow), an elective area (in gray), and the Diplom Thesis with the Research Seminar (in blue).

Compulsory Area

There is a small compulsory area in the main course of study. In semesters 5 and 6, learning about methodological principles is obligatory. In subsequent semesters, you have to complete an internship, conduct a research-related project in Business Information Systems (Belegarbeit) and visit the Research Seminar described below.

Elective Area

With 120 credit points, the elective area dominates the main course of study. Numerous modules in the fields of Business Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration and Economics, and Supplement are at your disposal. 

The minimum number of credit points to be achieved in these fields depends on the track chosen.

Tracks

There are two tracks available: Standard and International. You opt for the International track just by acquiring 20 credit points at a foreign university. Otherwise, you are on the track Standard.

• In the Standard track, you must acquire at least 40 credit points from the fields Business Information Systems and Computer Science.
• In the International track, it is just 30 credit points for either area.
• Moreover, in both tracks at least 10 credit points have to be earned in the field Business Administration and Economics.

Diplom Thesis and Research Seminar

Diplom Thesis and Research Seminar usually consume the final semester. For the Diplom Thesis, you will work independently on a topic in business information systems using scientific methods. The duration is four months. You get the necessary analytical and methodological skills and repeated feedback from your supervisor during the Research Seminar.

You are allowed to start with the Diplom Thesis only if you have already acquired 130 credit points in total before. Also, you must begin no later than the semester after passing the last exam.
