Path-based quality management in MS care (QPATH4MS)
Background
Patients accepting their therapies and medical decisions without asking questions are increasingly a phenomenon of the past. Patients are more aware of the advantages of being actively involved in the treatment process.
The QPATH4MS project aims to integrate a multi-dimensional quality management concept for multiple sclerosis care, which not only includes the medical perspective, but also that of the patient, and relies on digital solutions. The aim of this project is to improve the quality of medical care and make it sustainable for the future. The hub for QPATH4MS is the Multiple Sclerosis Center at the Department of Neurology at the Dresden University Hospital that treats around 1,000 patients per month.

Objectives
The goals of QPATH4MS are to be able to electronically store and coordinate patient paths across institutions, to be able to evaluate them using selected quality indicators, and to integrate the patients into this process.
The knowledge about one's own illness and thus about the optimal treatment and care processes should be made understandable and accessible for patients and their relatives. This means that patients and relatives can take advantage of more targeted health care services, better assess the quality of these services for their individual illness situation and thus manage them themselves. At the same time, outpatient and inpatient supply offers should be controlled in a targeted and efficient manner, so that unnecessary inpatient stays and multiple treatments and examinations can be avoided.
Based on already successfully integrated digital instruments, the course of treatment is electronically stored, structured and visualized for both the doctors and the patients. These treatment pathways are provided with quality indicators from medicine, health economics and technology, which can be checked and adjusted at any time by doctors and patients.
The benefits of QPATH4MS are that the health care system is relieved, costs are saved, and high-quality therapies are made available. Thanks to the use of telemedicine, these benefits can be offered regardless of where patients and their relatives live.
