Open positions
We are looking for Postdocs!
If you are interested in the lab in general as a postdoc, please feel free to apply with an open application, including a letter of motivation and a CV.
There will soon be two formal openings:
One for a deep learning engineer, a post-doctoral role for developing deep learning models for DNA sequence data with involvement in several projects in the lab. The role requires deep knowledge of deep learning infrastructures and their development, as well as excellent skills in python, code organization, and a team spirit.
One position will be on somatic cell evolution integrating deep learning on genomics data and single cell multi-omes.
We are looking for a data and IT manager.
We will be looking for a data and IT manager for the lab in Cologne. This is a supportive role to help with the organisation of the lab on high performance computing platforms. Responsibilities include the organization of large amounts of omics data, deep learning models, code, and data analysis pipelines. It involves getting lab members started on high performance computing and helping out with programming tasks, setting up data analysis pipelines, and related tasks.
If interested, please get in touch with Anna Poetsch. A formal advertisement will follow soon.
We are currently not explicitely looking for PhD students.
There is an option to apply to our lab together with a lab in Helmholtz through the innovation track of IDEAS.
In the next fall we will be recruiting through the CECAD graduate school in Cologne.
Placements and Theses
If you are interested in working with our group as a student, please be aware that this is not possible anymore in Dresden. If you wish to join the lab in Cologne, please get in touch with Anna Poetsch.
We are happy to host students from various backgrounds, including, but not limited to Computational Biology, Molecular Biology, Physics of Life, Computer Science, Machine Learning, and Medicine.
Please be aware that currently placements in the group are purely computational and require programming experience in R or Python. We can only offer projects that use computational biology (possibly including machine learning) with a biomedical focus and are related to the research direction of the group.
When getting in touch, please be specific about why you are interested in the lab and about the kind of topic you would like to work on. Generic applications and applications written by NLP tools are unlikely to be successful.
For machine learning theory or applying machine learning in other contexts, please have a look at CSBD or Scads.AI.
General expectations for new group members
1. Scientific curiosity
We are an interdisciplinary group at the intersection of molecular biology, computer science, and medicine. Our focus is to understand how genomes work. Curiosity and passion for related biomedical questions is therefore a requirement for our research. For a pure interest in medical, technical, or engineering challenges, there may be more suitable labs.
2. Interdisciplinary teamwork
The backgrounds within our research group are very diverse. Scientifically, this means a range from molecular biology to computer science and medicine. The projects are usually rooted in several disciplines and tend to involve stepping out of one's comfort zone. It is therefore paramount to be willing to work as a team and help each other out. This also involves commitment to support other lab members and to be available in person more frequently than from home office. You are the right person, if you are looking forward to also contribute to a community spirit in our group.
3. Openness and tolerance
We are an international team that is diverse in science, personal backgrounds and believes. Being open and tolerant to diversity in all its forms, and embracing the challenges it can sometimes bring, is therefore a prerequisite for doing science with us.
