Subsequent use and publication of research data - A guide
In consultations, we are continually confronted with questions about licensing and other legal aspects of publishing one’s own research findings and making them usable to others. The subsequent use of research data from other research groups or from archives is also increasingly important for initiating research projects. The Service Center Research Data is your first port of call for the planning and technical implementation of archiving and publishing research data. With regard to legal concerns such as licensing and data use contracts, however, other contacts may be able to offer more specialized expertise and more sound advice.
TU Dresden provides expert services which we can refer you to for your unanswered questions. In order to facilitate your search for the right contact, we have created a brief overview of the relevant institutions and the topics they cover.
Research Promotion (Unit 5.1) is happy to advise you on public funding measures and will also assist you in drafting third-party funding applications. In addition, you can also receive legal advice here on data use contracts in initiating collaboration as part of publicly funded research projects. In cases where personal or other sensitive data is processed, you can also contact Information Security (Unit 3.5).
For questions about licenses for your research findings (data, software, products), patents, or other general transfer of scientific findings to industry and society, TU Dresden’s Transfer Office will be happy to advise you.
Beyond research funding and transfer, the Legal Office (Unit 3.4) also offers legal advising services for all TU Dresden members regarding university matters.
Maybe contract research is a key topic for you. If so, the Administration of External Funding (Unit 1.3) team, in particular the Contract Research group, can offer advice on drafting your contract and separating commercial activities from non-commercial activities.
For questions about Open Science and related topics (incl. licenses), you can also contact the Open Science Lab at the SLUB Dresden library.
You can find detailed information on TU Dresden’s research services on the web pages of the various institutions as well as all in one place in the form of a brochure published by Directorate 5 – Research.
If you are still not sure who to contact, or if you have other general questions about research data management, feel free to send us an email via the Service Center Research Data or book an appointment for a consultation.
