I don’t have any research data! Or do I?
At the heart of research data management is the question of which data should actually be “managed”. Some researchers wonder whether their research produces “research data” at all. This thought is not entirely far-fetched. After all, the term “data” is used in all sorts of contexts these days without being precisely defined.
Here is a definition of research data:
„[Research data is] data that, depending on the context, is the subject of a research process, arises during a research process, or is the result of it.“ (translated)
The German Research Foundation (German: DFG) elaborates on this definition in its guidelines:
“Research data includes measurement data, laboratory values, audiovisual information, texts, survey data, object from collections or samples [...]. Methodological testing procedures, such as questionnaires, software, and simulations [...]“ (translated)
What can we take away from this? Depending on the discipline and the research topic, an enormous range of data can be relevant to one’s research - and thus be considered “research data.” In the end, it is up to the research group to decide itself.
