Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize 2026
The Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize is awarded for outstanding research achievements and is one of the most important research funding prizes in Germany. The funds are intended to improve the working conditions of outstanding top researchers and expand their research opportunities, relieve them of administrative workloads and make it easier for them to employ particularly qualified early-career researchers. Up to ten prizes, each endowed with 2.5 million euros, can be awarded annually.
Criteria for the selection of award winners
- Top position or outstanding position in the field of research,
- particular appeal to researchers in an early career phase and from Germany and abroad,
- previous scientific achievement has advanced the further development of their own field of research,
- scientific achievement is scientifically excellent and exceptional, original and pioneering, internationally leading,
- scientific achievement can be expected to have a lasting influence on the future development of the research field.
Proposal modalities
- Prize can be awarded to scientists and research teams from all scientific fields
