Our conception
Technology Platforms
Technology Platforms at TU Dresden act as the overarching structure of one or more Core Facilities or other research infrastructure, respectively.
In operational terms, they have
- User Regulations
- Rules of procedure
Within this framework, the core facilities of the Technology Platform are managed.
The intended goals are:
- Access to a wide range of technologies without own investment in necessary underlying infrastructure
- Increase of the economic efficiency of the technical and professional equipment of the structural units
- Creating syngergies between departments
Core facilities
Through the joint use of research infrastructures in the form of Technology Platforms, it has been possible to make highly specialized technologies as well as related services and scientific know-how available to a broad range of users at the science location Dresden. The synergetic use of equipment and facilities in Research Core Facilites allows existing resources to be used efficiently.
Core Facilities have not yet found an adequate equivalent in the German-speaking world. They are used in the context of Technology Platforms and should rather be understood as Research Core Facilities, because they have are inherently connected to research.
A core facility should be understood as a service center that groups distributed resources. A Research Core Facility is usually characterized by the following features:
- It has its own personnel
- it has its own equipment (research infrastructure)
- It has its own premises
- It can operate independently
- It can offer its own services
In addition, a Research Core Facility strives to cover its own maintenance costs, e.g. through user fees.
The strength of a Research Core Facility lies in providing access to distributed resources that are otherwise difficult to access. However, there is no exclusive association with a single research group.
