A successful start to the new school year: With the assistance of scouts, youth school students went on a 24-hour camping trip. They set up the camping area, organized and prepared dinner and enjoyed time together by the campfire.
The launch of the youth school marks another milestone for the University School Dresden’s secondary school students. Learning with emphasis on practical life and work application is the goal of this particular project, which was developed in collaboration with Prof. Rolf Koerber, responsible for the subject Economy, Technology and Home Economics/Social Affairs (WTH/S) at TU Dresden's Faculty of Education. The youth school expands the learning environment for young people to experience outdoor and vocational spaces in addition to the school itself.
Learning self-reliance, experiencing work and gaining a sense of direction – this is what students in grades 6 and 7 had the opportunity to learn when they spent 24 hours camping on the school grounds. In subsequent modules, the young people work on projects to investigate agriculture or forestry, followed by trades or industrial enterprises. They also gain further experience outdoors with support from learning facilitators and cooperation partners. As the students reach upper secondary education, they will be able to independently plan and carry out excursions and trips lasting several days in conjunction with project work.
“Supported by scouts, university students, learning facilitators and parents, the youth school pupils erected shelters, cooked dinner together under the stars and learned basic survival skills. This marks the successful start to the University School's third year, bringing together different school systems under one roof.”
Prof. Dr. Rolf Koerber, responsible for the subject Economy, Technology and Home Economics/Social Affairs (WTH/S) at the Faculty of Education
