From the SWR press release " ARD Wissen: Tracking down education"
"The results of the latest PISA study are alarming. German pupils have the worst results ever in an international comparison of performance. At the same time, Germany has the fourth-highest school dropout rate in the EU and one in three children in Germany feels stressed by school. What needs to change? In the two-part series "ARD Wissen: Spurensuche Bildung", journalist Frank Seibert goes in search of inspiring models that could also be implemented in Germany.
"Schule ohne Druck?" can be seen on April 29, 2024, "Abitur für alle?" on September 9, 2024 on ARD. Both parts will be available for viewing in the ARD Mediathek from April 29, 2024.
"School without pressure?": Individuality, independence, curiosity
Part 1 in the ARD media library: "School without pressure - Frank Seibert and Germany's most exciting school trial"
Can school work without pressure and do children and young people still learn enough? Frank Seibert wants to find out at the Dresden University School, where innovative forms of teaching and learning are being tested under scientific supervision. The pupils learn in age mixed groups across levels without a timetable, without homework and without grades. Frank Seibert accompanies twelve-year-old Leefke in her everyday school life for several months and immerses himself in a completely different school concept to the one he experienced himself. A school without pressure that promotes students' individuality, supports their independence and curiosity and encourages them to learn independently - is that possible after all?
"A-levels for all?": Equal opportunities in a Canadian oasis
Part 2 in the ARD media library: "Abitur für alle? Frank Seibert and fair education"
In Germany, the educational attainment of children still depends primarily on their parents' income. Canada's education system, on the other hand, does very well - not only in the international PISA study, but also in the equal opportunities ranking. How do they do it? Frank Seibert travels to Winnipeg and experiences a very special school day there. Gordon Bell High School is open to everyone. Children with refugee experience, underage mothers or young people with mental illnesses find the individual support they need here. Are there such oases in the German school system? Frank Seibert visits the Gymnasium Essen Nord-Ost, which has equal opportunities as its primary goal. The 842 pupils come from 60 different nations. 90 percent of the children and young people do not speak German at home. How can the German education system provide equal opportunities for all?
