Transferring university, parallel studies, recognition of credits
Transferring from TU Dresden to another university
Your new university will decide how to credit the work you completed at TU Dresden. Before you leave the university, please ask your Examination Office to print out a transcript of records showing the credits you achieved here, or arrange for an overview of this type to be sent to you later if you are still waiting on results.
Transferring to TU Dresden
- You will find general information on applying to TU Dresden here.
- You must include a certificate confirming the crediting of your previous semesters in your application. Please do not use the Admissions Office’s form for this. Instead, please use one if the following:
- Application to the Faculty of Education Form for receiving credit for previous semesters, Faculty of Education
- Application to the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science or the Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies: Form for receiving credit for previous semesters, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science, Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies
- Please fill out the form and send it to the responsible Academic Advisor (visit the Institute’s homepage to find their contact details). They will add their decision on how to credit your achievements and state in which semester of study at TU Dresden you should be placed. Please include the following documents:
- A certificate of enrollment from your previous university detailing which subject you studied and for how many semesters.
- A fully completed form for receiving credit for examined assessments. Please enclose a certified transcript of records or certified proof of academic performance with your application. Please note that you must enter the name of the module in accordance with TU Dresden's Study Regulations in the column “Anerkennung für das Modul” (Recognition for the module). You do not need to fill out the “Prüfungsnummer” (examination number) column.
If you completed the examined assessments abroad, please also submit the annex “study-related stays abroad”
- An overview of the exams you completed but have not yet received a grade for (you can get these formally recognized after enrolling at TU Dresden).
Please note: We cannot process incomplete applications. These will be sent back to the applicant to be completed, delaying the issuance of the Certificate of Credits Achieved (Anrechnungsbescheinigung).
After being processed by the Institute’s Academic Advisor, the submitted documents will be forwarded via the Examination Office to the Examination Committee, who makes the final decision. After this, the placement notice will be sent to you. We cannot forward the placement notice directly to the Admissions Office, as you must first have time to take note of the placement and lodge an appeal, should you deem it necessary.
Please include your email address so we can contact you if we have questions!
Please bear in mind that we receive a lot of transfer applications at the end of the semester. We therefore recommend submitting your application as soon as possible.
Changing your degree program at TU Dresden, parallel studies
- The general application procedure applies in these cases. You will find more information on this here. Please enclose a form for receiving credit for previous semesters when applying for a new degree program.
- You must also submit a form for receiving credit for previous semesters if you would like to start parallel studies. In this form, you can indicate that you have already completed examinations from your first course of study which are eligible for recognition. The Academic Advisors will decide which semester you should be placed in for your parallel studies subject. If you are applying for a program with restricted admission, there must be a free slot for you during the semester.
- Take this form and a fully completed form for receiving credit for examined assessments and then speak directly to the Academic Advisor for your new subject. Please bring an overview of your current grades with you. After the Academic Advisor decides on how to credit your achievements and makes a recommendation regarding semester placement, please submit all the documents to the Examination Office.
Recognition of examined assessments from studies abroad
As a rule, credit is awarded as described under the heading “Transferring to TU Dresden” via the form for receiving credit for examined assessments. Please also submit the annex “study-related stays abroad”. Here, too, the examined assessments you completed abroad will be allocated the equivalent amount of credits at TU Dresden. We recommend speaking with your Academic Advisor before your stay abroad to ask what you should be aware of for getting your credits recognized later. Please re-read the regulations on credit recognition in your Examination Regulations – in particular the passage on grade transfer. This only takes place if the grading systems are comparable, which is rare in cases of studies abroad.
