FAQs
General information
SELMA: is the leading examination management system for all degree programs in Computer Science. Registration and admission via this portal is mandatory and a prerequisite for participation in every examination (including preliminary examinations)
IMPORTANT: Module registration is mandatory BEFORE exam registration. The examination performance is not visible without module registration!
Module and examination registration
- The prerequisite for exam registration is enrolment in the respective degree program and that the degree program has not yet been definitively failed.
- Examination registration is only possible if you have registered for the module. Module registration must take place BEFORE registration for the examination or preliminary examination. The examination (preliminary) performance is not visible without module registration! You must also have registered for the module before you can register for preliminary examination work.
For some modules, a course registration must be made in addition to the module registration, as otherwise an examination registration is not possible. - It is not possible to complete the examination WITHOUT passing the PVL. A
will be communicated to the student AND the examiner as a system message.
system message.
The student will be removed from the list of participants in the examination.
This process is recorded in selma / CN.
It is also mandatory to register for the (preliminary) examination in selma.
If there is not yet a passed preliminary examination (PVL) in the system, registration for the
registration for the examination is only possible "under reserve". - Exam registrations in SELMA (> under Exams > Register | Deregister - as a reminder
reminder, here is the link for Selma https://selma.tu-dresden.de/) are only possible during the specified registration periods (1-4).
The examination registration periods are published semester by semester on the Examination Office website under Examination Registration Periods . - You can deregister for examinations online via SELMA without giving reasons. The corresponding deregistration deadlines can also be found on the Examination Office website under "Examinations" and " Examination deregistration/withdrawal". Once the deregistration deadline has passed, it is no longer possible to deregister via the system. The binding examination registration remains valid.
Where can I find what?
You can find click aids for using SELMA (e.g. module and exam registration) in the SELMA usage instructions.
When is a repeat examination possible
It is possible to retake a failed examination at the next possible examination date - a module status is created immediately with an assessment.
Prerequisite for the awarding of credit points | Credit points are earned if the module examination is passed. The module examination consists of a written examination lasting 90 minutes. |
It is only possible to repeat the failed examination if the second examination has also been passed AND the module status shows a 5.0 (failed).
Prerequisite for the awarding of credit points | Credit points are earned if the module examination is passed. The module examination consists of a written examination lasting 90 minutes and a written examination lasting 120 minutes. |
Registration problems
If technical problems occur during online registration or if it is not possible to register for an examination, please contact the Computer Science Examination Office ( pruefungsamt.inf@tu-dresden.de ) by e-mail within the respective registration period with a full-page screenshot of the screen .
Viewing examination results
- Where can I see my exam results - in selma -> under Exams -> Results
- What do I need to know?
- You can view your examination results in SELMA in 3 ways, namely as:
"Exam results", "Semester results" and "Study results
- In "Exam results" you can see the published exams that you have completed as part of your active studies. The exams are sorted chronologically according to the
examination date.
- In "Semester results" you can see the published results that you have achieved or recognized in a
semester or have been recognized. In the selection list
"Semester" you select the semester for which you want to view the results.
results.
- In "Study results" you can see the results of all the coursework you have completed during your studies.
The modules are displayed according to your examination regulations. You can expand the individual sections and elective areas. You can also see here whether a section from the examination regulations has been completed.
In the study results, results from module offers and independent courses as well as results of recognized achievements from Germany and abroad are displayed. The results are only displayed once at least one attempt has been published.
Explanation of the module examination
A module examination usually consists of several examinations. Only when the module examination has been taken and the module grade is less than sufficient (4.0) is it determined whether the module examination has been failed and must therefore be repeated. Passing and
Passing and retaking generally refer to the module examination and not to the individual examinations.
Deadlines for repeating a module examination
A failed module examination must be repeated once within one year. A second resit examination can only be taken at the next possible examination date. After this, the module examination is deemed to have been definitively failed. A further repeat examination is not permitted. Exception: "free attempt regulation", see respective examination regulations
If a failed module examination consists of several examinations, only the examination that was assessed as failed (5.0) can be repeated. The passed examination remains valid.
Do all module examinations have to be passed?
No. The module examination is generally passed if the (possibly weighted) average of the associated examinations is at least "sufficient" (4.0). Information on weighting can be found in the module descriptions.
Can examinations graded "unsatisfactory" (5.0) or "failed" be repeated before the module examination is completed?
No. Examinations are only taken as part of the module examinations. It is only possible to take the examination again when repeating the module examination. All examinations in a module must always be taken before individual failed examinations can be retaken.
For modules in which the examinations extend over several semesters, this can mean that it is only in a later semester that it is decided whether an examination can be repeated or not. Only after the module grade has been calculated is it clear whether the module as a whole has been failed.
What is a free attempt?
If a module examination is taken before the semester specified in the curriculum, it is considered a free attempt. A module examination not passed in a free attempt is deemed not to have been taken. A module examination passed in a free attempt can be repeated once at the next regular examination date to improve the grade. The better grade then counts.
Please note: If you miss the next regular examination date, it is no longer possible to improve your grade.
Exam registration - when, where and how
Exam registration is only possible within the respective exam registration periods via SELMA . Within these examination registration periods, only those examinations are released for registration in SELMA that are assigned to the respective registration periods based on their type of examination (e.g. oral examinations = registration period 3).
The examination registration periods are published semester by semester on the website of the Examination Office for Computer Science under Examinations.
Important notes:
- You can only register for examinations via SELMA if you are enrolled in the respective degree program.
- You must register for the module before registering for examinations, otherwise you will not be able to register for examinations.
- If the examination registration deadline has been missed, subsequent examination registration is not permitted if there are reasons for which the student is responsible.
- SELMA is the only binding examination registration portal. If an examination registration has not been made via SELMA, there is no admission to the examination. The examination may not be taken.
Withdrawing from exams / withdrawing from exams
You can normally deregister without giving reasons up to three working days before a written examination (written examination paper) and up to two weeks before oral and other examinations without giving reasons.
Example: A written exam is due to take place on Monday and you want to withdraw from it. In this case, you must withdraw from the examination by Wednesday of the previous week, 11:59 pm. You can deregister online via SELMA.
The deregistration deadlines for the individual examinations must be observed.
It is no longer possible to deregister for examinations after the deregistration deadline. The binding examination registration remains valid.
Withdrawal from examinations due to illness
In the event of withdrawal due to illness, the application for withdrawal from examinations due to illness and the medical certificate form must be used. These certificates must be submitted in the original no later than 5 working days after the examination date and can be sent by post or deposited in one of the TUD's official mailboxes/deadline mailboxes. It is not possible to send them by e-mail.
In principle , a withdrawal due to illness must be made *before* the examination. Declarations of withdrawal that are received by the Examination Committee after the examination date without participation in the examination and are based on reasons that already existed before the examination date can therefore generally not be recognized. If you take part in an examination, you are generally declaring that you are fit to take the examination without being able to subsequently invoke health impairments.
Repeating examinations
First of all, it is important to distinguish whether it is an examination in a module with several examinations or just one!
- For a module that concludes with an examination, if the examination is not passed, this attempt at the module examination is assessed as "failed" and must be repeated.
- In the case of a module with several examinations (e.g. the math modules INF-[B|D]-110 and INF-[B|D]-120), all examinations required in the module must first be completed. The module grade is then determined. If this module grade is 4.1 or worse, this attempt at the module examination is deemed to have been failed. In the case of a retake, only those examinations that were not passed in the previous module examination attempt can be repeated. Examinations that have already been passed cannot be repeated.
Please note that it is not permitted to repeat a module examination that has been passed.
If you fail a module examination, you will be notified accordingly (i.e. an official notification will be sent to the address you have entered in SELMA). This notification will include information on the retake deadlines. Further details are regulated by the applicable study and examination regulations!
What is a waiver?
- With a declaration of waiver, every student can declare in writing to the Examination Office that they do not wish to take an examination.
- The declaration of waiver is permitted for each examination attempt, i.e. also for the repeat attempt.
- The declaration of waiver can be submitted at any time and regardless of examination registration periods or current examination offers. The examination date is the date of the application!
- The waiver form can be found under Examination Forms on the Examination Office website. The waiver must be submitted in the original (printed and signed) by post or in person to the Examination Office for Computer Science. Submission by e-mail is not legally permissible.
Examination results
Your examination results are published in the student portal selma.
Please contact the examiners if you are missing results from previous semesters or if there are any discrepancies.
Inspection
You can submit an informal request to the respective examiner within one year of completing the respective examination procedure to inspect your written examination papers, including the related assessments and examination records.
You can arrange an individual appointment with the examiner to inspect these documents. Some Chairs/Institutes offer a central appointment in the semester for written examinations and only in exceptional cases an individual appointment.
You have the option of applying for compensation for disadvantages due to a disability or chronic illness when taking examinations.
You can also apply for compensation for the care of your own children up to the age of 14 or the care of your close relatives.
You can submit an informal application for compensation for disadvantages in writing, stating the reasons for the proposed compensation for disadvantages and submit it to the Examination Office in good time with suitable evidence. The Examination Committee will decide on the application at its own discretion.
Suitable measures to compensate for disadvantages in examinations and preliminary examinations may include, for example, extended processing times, processing breaks or the use of other media.
Further information as well as advice and support services can be found here: Studying with disabilities

Applying for additional modules
To apply for additional modules, please send an e-mail to pruefungsamt.inf@tu-dresden.de with the subject "Application for additional module".
Attach the relevant module description to your e-mail as a PDF attachment.
The e-mail must also contain the following information
- Current degree program, matriculation number (mandatory), name of the examiners, name of the course (for catalog modules, such as INF-B-510).
The additional module is set up in SELMA by the Examination Office. Independent module registration for additional modules is not possible in SELMA.
Once the additional module has been set up by the Examination Office, it should be possible to register for examinations independently in SELMA.
If you have any problems or questions in this regard, please contact your Examination Office.
You must register your thesis (Bachelor's, Master's or Diploma thesis), just like any other examination. In various degree programs, you can only be admitted to the final thesis if you meet certain requirements. This is, for example, the achievement of a certain number of credit points.
Admission requirements for starting the final thesis
- Bachelor's degree programs: According to §26 of the current examination regulations, there are no formal requirements for the Bachelor's thesis. However, according to the study plan, it is advisable to start the Bachelor's thesis only after completing the basic subjects.
The Bachelor's thesis must have been graded at least "sufficient" (4.0) before the defense. - Master's in Computer Science: Before starting the Master's thesis, the module examinations of the selected profile modules must be completed and passed with at least "sufficient" (4.0).
The Master's thesis must have been graded at least "sufficient" (4.0) before the defense. - Master's in Media Computer Science: There are no further admission requirements for starting the Master's thesis.
The Master's thesis must have been graded at least "sufficient" (4.0) before the defense. - Master's degree course in Computational Modeling and Simulation: There are no further admission requirements for starting the Master's thesis.
The Master's thesis must have been graded at least "sufficient" (4.0) before the defense. - Master's degree course in Distributed Systems Engineering: Admission requirement in accordance with § 26 (2) MPO "The topic of the Master's thesis may be issued if the student has achieved 80 credit points. The start of the Master's thesis also requires the completion of the module from the area of general qualification".
- Diploma in Computer Science: (matriculation year from 2010) The admission requirement for starting the thesis is the completion of the profile modules.
Before the defense of the diploma thesis, 284 credit points must have been earned. This means that for the defense, with which one credit point is earned, the specialization module with 15 credit points, for example, may also be missing.
Before the defense, the thesis must have been graded at least "sufficient" (4.0). The 29 credit points for the thesis are already acquired if the thesis has been graded at least "sufficient" (4.0) and therefore count towards the required 284 CP.
Topic of the thesis
- The topics for theses are assigned by the Chairs themselves. As a rule, you must contact the respective Chair or the respective supervisor of your desired topic directly. You can find links to descriptions of thesis topics from the various Chairs here.
- In principle, it is possible to write your thesis externally. To do this, you will need to find two examiners at the faculty whose subject area is related to the topic of your thesis and who are in favor of this approach. You will also need a supervisor at the institution where you will be working on your thesis. This supervisor must be in a position to assess the performance of the thesis from a professional and scientific point of view.
Please note: The topic/title of the thesis is binding and may not differ between the registration and the submitted thesis. The registered language in which the thesis is to be written is also binding. The examiners may not change either.
The Examination Committee decides on admission and the issue of the topic and appoints the examiners.
As a rule, the topic is officially issued to you by the Examination Committee via the Examination Office. Please refer to the Examination Office website for possible deviations from this procedure.
The deadline for the processing period starts when the topic is issued.
Issuing topics ex officio
If you have passed all the module examinations required for your degree, have fulfilled any other requirements for the degree and are only missing the final thesis (possibly with colloquium/defense), the Examination Committee will issue you with a topic "ex officio" after a deadline specified in your examination regulations. More recent examination regulations stipulate that the Examination Committee must issue the topic in the semester following the semester in which the last module examination required for the degree was passed.
- Recommendation: Clarify a topic with possible supervisors or examiners at an early stage according to your interests and register your thesis in good time.
Returning topics
Once you have been given a topic for your thesis, you can return the topic within a period specified in the examination regulations.
A return is only possible once. If, for example, you have exhausted the possibility of returning the topic in the first attempt of your thesis, you can no longer return the topic issued when you repeat the thesis.
Registration for the thesis
Students must register for the thesis themselves by submitting the registration form. The relevant registration form can be found on the Examination Office website under Forms and Forms Examinations
Please note the following when completing the form:
- Personal details
- Title of the thesis in German and English
- Confirmation with signature on the form by two authorized members of the Faculty of Computer Science to review the thesis
Submission of the registration form
- digital signatures - sending the thesis registration form by e-mail to . Please note that you must have a valid digital signature from the ZIH if you wish to sign the registration form electronically.
- handwritten signatures - submission of the thesis registration form by post or in person during the office hours of the Examination Office for Computer Science
Extension of the processing time
The processing time for the thesis can be extended upon request. There must be reasons for this for which you are not responsible. In the classic case, this is illness (medical certificate/medical certificate required). However, it could also be, for example, the failure of a device that is absolutely necessary for the thesis or the loss of data. Ultimately, the Examination Committee decides on the recognition of the reasons and thus the extension of the processing time.
You can find the application to extend the processing time for the thesis on the Examination Office website under Forms and Forms Examinations.
Submission of the thesis
In accordance with the applicable examination regulations, two typed and bound copies as well as a digital text version on a suitable data carrier (CD or stick) must be submitted.
Submission of bound copies:
- Two copies of the thesis must be submitted to the Examination Office by the deadline.
- If the Examination Office is not staffed and on Sundays and public holidays, the thesis can be submitted via the deadline mailbox (white mailbox in the passageway between Tillichbau and Hülsse-Bau, Helmholtzstraße 10) to meet the deadline. The deadline mailbox is emptied daily by TU Dresden's central post office and the mail is stamped with a receipt stamp.
- It is also possible to send the thesis by post. Please note that only the postmark of the central post office of TU Dresden is valid to meet the deadline.
The Examination Office will forward the thesis to the supervisor.
Submission in digital form:
Sending the thesis in due time including the
declaration of independence (digitally signed or with signature) exclusively by e-mail to the functional address theses.inf@tu-dresden.de
- [Diploma Computer Science students only:] fully completed application for defense (signed by digital signature or with a signature strip)
- the submission e-mail must contain the following information:
- Subject: "Submission [Bachelor|Master|Diploma] thesis [Computer Science|Media Computer Science|CSE|DSE|EMCL|MCL|CMS]"
- Mail content: Full name (last name, first name), matriculation number, degree program and type of thesis (Bachelor, Master, Diploma), title of thesis, examiner, supervisor (last name, first name, e-mail address) - If the thesis attachments to be submitted are larger than 20 MB, they must be saved in the TUD CloudStore and a link to the uploaded file(s) on the CloudStore must be provided in the submission email
Upon receipt of the e-mail in the mailbox, the student will receive a confirmation e-mail.
It will be forwarded to the supervisor by the Examination Office.
Please note: The submission deadline is also binding for electronic submissions. The submission by e-mail (including the uploading of files) must be completed by 23:39 on the day of submission. If the email is not received in the Examination Office's email inbox until 00:00 or 00:01, the thesis is deemed not to have been submitted on time and therefore failed (5.0).
Colloquium / Defense
n most degree programs, a colloquium or defense is provided as an independent examination component of the final thesis (see regulations in the respective examination regulations). The subject-specific admission requirement is a grade of at least "sufficient" (4.0) for the final thesis. You then no longer need to register for the colloquium / defense.
Repetition of final theses
The deadlines for repeating theses are set out in the relevant examination regulations. As a rule, final theses with a grade lower than "sufficient" (4.0) can be repeated within one year. A second repetition is scheduled for the next possible date.
Applying for BAföG
Applications for BAföG are made via the Studentenwerk.
Form 05
All students who receive BAföG are funded for four semesters without a performance review. From the 5th semester onwards, educational support is only provided if students can prove that the credit points (completed modules) specified by the Examination Committee have been achieved after the 3rd FS or 4th FS.
Proof shall be deemed to have been submitted at the end of the previous semester if it is submitted within the first four months of the following semester and it is clear from the proof that the work specified therein was already completed in the previous semester.
Proof must be provided using form 5 in accordance with § 48 BAföG.
Required achievements:
If you have acquired at least 80% of the possible credit points to be acquired according to the regular study schedule in your semester (LPmax), you will receive confirmation that you have completed the "usual" achievements (see table below). This is to take into account the fact that, particularly in the case of modules that extend over several semesters, the credit points are only acquired when the corresponding module examination is passed at the end of the respective module.
Degree program | 3rd semester | 4th semester | 5th semester | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
LPmax | 80% | LPmax | 80% | LPmax | 80% | |
Bachelor Computer Science | 81 | 65 | 120 | 96 | 150 | 120 |

The confirmation of Form 05 is signed by the chairpersons of the respective Examination Committees.
Prior to this, a preliminary examination must be carried out by the Examination Office.
Form 05 must therefore be completed in advance and submitted to the Examination Office in the original.
In individual cases, students are requested by the Student Services Office to provide proof of achievements for a specific semester using Form 05. In this case, the notice of request from the Studentenwerk is required for further processing. A copy of this must be submitted with form 05
Documents submitted by e-mail are not permitted.
Further links/notes:
A semester of leave is generally applied for at the TU Admissions Office.
Information and the application form can be found on the TU Dresden Admissions Office website.
Students who wish to switch from the Bachelor's to the Master's degree program and have not yet completed all examinations or modules in the Bachelor's degree program by the start of the semester are recommended to enrol in both degree programs at the same time. However, this must be applied for at the Imma-Amt/Auslandsamt(Admissions Office) by submitting an application for parallel studies. If the application is not submitted, you will only be enrolled in the Master's degree program. This means that the student in selma may no longer be able to register for examinations in the Bachelor's degree program. This also means that without an application, you will not be able to study on the Bachelor's degree program in the winter semester and will not be able to take examinations.
Applying for and issuing certificate documents (graduation documents)
Degree documents include the certificate, the transcript with supplement and a diploma supplement for your degree. In some degree programs, there is also a supplement in accordance with the examination regulations.
You will not automatically receive the certificate for your final examination and the certificate for the award of your academic degree.
To apply, please use the application for the issue of certificate documents. You must also declare whether you would like the duration of your studies to be shown and whether any additional modules you have completed should be shown with an assessment. You can find the relevant form on the Examination Office website under Forms.
You can submit the application for the issue of certificate documents by post, in person or by email to the Examination Office. Please ensure that the form contains all the necessary information, e.g. personal e-mail address and date, as well as your signature.
The total processing time for issuing the certificate documents is currently 6 - 8 weeks. It is advisable to apply for a certificate of completion and a final overview of grades when applying for the certificate documents, which can be used as proof of graduation or for application purposes.
Receipt of the certificate documents
Personal collection:
If your certificate documents are signed and available at the Examination Office, you will receive an information email about when and where you can collect your certificate documents.
Collection with authorization:
If you are unable to collect your certificate documents in person, you can authorize a person you trust with a power of attorney issued by you.
Please note the following:
- The power of attorney is an informal letter, which is only legally valid if it contains the surname, first name and date of birth of the person to be issued and has been signed by them. The power of attorney must be accompanied by a copy of the identity card of the person to be authorized.
- The power of attorney must contain details of the surname, first name and date of birth of the authorized person. The authorized person must be able to identify themselves when collecting the certificate documents.
Please note: Mobile phone messages or printed e-mails do not constitute a legally binding power of attorney!
Postal delivery:
If you would like to receive your certificate documents by post, please let us know by e-mail, stating your current address or an alternative address (e.g. parents' address).
All TU Dresden documents that are required in certified form may be officially certified by the TU Dresden certification offices. This service is free of charge for students. Please inform yourself in advance HERE about the necessary documents, opening hours etc.
Exmatriculation is always carried out ex officio by the Admissions Office at the end of the semester (31.03. or 30.09.).
