Examinations
The lecture period typically lasts until the first week in February, afterwards you have time for independent exam preparation. During the lecture-free period, the exams take place as well as the introductory or introductory and programming internships.
There will be learning rooms for most subjects, the dates of which will be announced in good time on display stands in the foyer.
Examinations in the Bachelor's programmes are held in the first semester for the following subjects/modules:
- Introduction to mathematics,
- Algorithms and data structures,
- Introductory intership,
- Introduction to media computer science.
The exams in the first semester for the Diplom programme are:
- RoboLab and programming of strategy games,
- Introduction to mathematics,
- Algorithms and data structures,
- Fundamentals of computer engineering (written examination).
The examinations in Computer architecture as well as the internship of the module Fundamentals of computer engineering and hardware internship take place after the second semester according to the regular study plan. All other times for module examinations can be found in the respective study plan, which is part of the Study Regulations (Bachelor Informatik, Bachelor Medieninformatik, Diplom Informatik). The concrete examination dates can be found under this link. You must register for the examinations. Detailed information can be found there. Enrolment is usually done via jExam.
Please note that the registration period for the exams is limited. Later registration is not possible. Withdrawal from a written examination, on the other hand, can be done up to 3 working days before the examination.
The examination period of the faculty of computer science usually starts with the end of the lecture period and lasts approximately four weeks.
Please note, that the introductory internship in the Bachelor’s programmes “computer science” and “media computer science” as well as the introductory and programming internship in the diploma’s programme “computer science” are block internships to be attended and completed during the semester breaks.
Since oral examinations are coordinated by the students themselves, they are scheduled independently of the usual examination period.
German degree programmes: Registration for written examinations in the compulsory modules is usually done viajExam. Registration for module examinations with optional content (the examination is usually oral) is done using the respective form (see below) via the Examinations Office. The examination date is individually arranged with the secretary of the examiner.
English degree programmes: Registration mus be done within selma.
Here you can find the form pages for the respective degree programmes:

Examinations in modules INF-B-5*0 do not have the character of a complex examination, each course is examined individually. Proof of performance must be provided for each examination. The module grade is determined by the Examinations Office on the basis of the complete certificates of achievement and the corresponding form.
Yes, according to the new University Law of Saxony (§20, section 3), students are also allowed to take academic and examination credits during the semester of holiday. However, leave of absence is only approved for important reasons.
In general, it is possible to cancel without giving reasons up to three working days (including the day of the examination) before a written form and up to two weeks before oral and other examinations without giving reasons.
Example: On Monday, a written form examination is to take place from which you wish to cancel your registration. In this case you must register your withdrawal from the examination by 23:59 hrs on Thursday of the previous week.
If you have registered via jExam for the exam you want to withdraw from, you can also cancel your registration there. In the case of oral examinations registered via the Examinations Office, deregistration is carried out via the Examinations Office. If you have arranged an examination date with a university teacher, you will generally have to cancel the date within the specified period of time at the respective secretariat.
In case of withdrawal due to illness, the Request for withdrawal from examinations due to illness and the Medical Certificate form must be used. These certificates must be submitted in the original, no later than 5 business days after the examination date, and can be sent by post or inserted in one of the available official letterboxes/deadline mailboxes of the TUD. It is not possible to send them by e-mail.
The official letterboxes at the TU Dresden for medical certificates with deadlines can be found here.
The envelope must contain the complete address (see below), otherwise the letters cannot be correctly assigned and your withdrawal cannot take effect:
TU Dresden
Fakultät Informatik
Prüfungsamt | [Ihr Studiengang]
01062 Dresden
These letterboxes are emptied daily by the postal service and are date stamped.
In principle, a withdrawal due to illness must be asserted *before* the examination. Declarations of withdrawal which are only received by the examination board after the examination date without participation in the examination and which are based on reasons which already existed before the examination date cannot be accepted.
If you take part in an examination, you are declaring that you are fit to take the examination without being able to subsequently claim that you have health problems.
Finally, we draw your attention to the fact that your withdrawal only becomes legally binding once it has been approved by the examination board. If the resignation is not approved by the examination board, you will receive a written form with instructions on how to appeal.
It is called withdrawal from an examination if the deadline for deregistration without giving reasons has already passed. The withdrawal must be notified to the head of the examination board immediately in written form and must be made plausible. Further information on withdrawal can be found here.

If a module examination is taken before the semester specified in the study plan, it is considered as a free attempt. A module examination which is not passed in the free attempt is considered as not taken. A module examination passed in the free attempt can be repeated once on the next regular examination date to improve the grade. The better mark then counts. Please note that if you let the next regular examination date pass, it is no longer possible to improve your grade.
In jExam all exams are registered as regular exams. If the first attempt (see [What is a free attempt?]) is to be registered as a free attempt, you must register at the Examinations Office. The staff at the Examinations Office will check whether the examination is a free attempt and enables you to register for the regular examination in jExam.
Repeat examination 1 (WH1): Failed module examinations can be repeated once within one year after completion of the first examination attempt. (Written form examinations are generally offered at the Faculty of Computer Science every semester. This means that it is possible to retake these examinations after only one semester).
Repeat examination 2 (WH2): A second repeat must be taken on the next possible examination date after WH1. After that, the module examination is considered to be failed.
(The examination dates are published on the faculty websites).
Attention! The repetition of a passed module examination is not permitted. If a module examination consists of several grades and you have failed one of these exams/works, but have already passed the other and the module grade (calculated according to the applicable module description) is at least "sufficient" (4.0), then the failed graded paper cannot be repeated.
No. The module examination is generally passed if the (possibly weighted) average of the relevant examination credits is at least "sufficient" (4.0) (see also Compensation of examination credits).
The compensation of examination performances refers to module examinations with several examination results. Unless otherwise stated in the module descriptions, only the total module grade must be at least "sufficient" (4.0). A module examination consisting of several examination results can be passed if the grades of the individual examination results are weighted accordingly, even if one of the examination results is not passed.
The Admissions Office carries out the exmatriculation ex officio at the end of the semester.
Forms for the crediting of academic and examination achievements can be found on the forms page of the examination office. The original copies of proof of academic achievements as well as the respecting course descriptions must also be submitted or presented to the Examinations Office upon submission of the application. The examination board decides whether the subject recognition is to be carried out by a university teacher responsible for the subject.
Please note the information on this page regarding the recognition of academic and examination achievements in the course of a change of degree programme.
Open examination procedures must be specified in the application for the crediting of academic and examination achievements in the course of a change of degree programme.
→ These include all examinations for which registration has been received and which have not yet been successfully completed or for which no grades have yet been given.
