Research group SmartLab systems
The research group SmartLab systems at the Institute of Natural Materials Technology focus on development projects in the areas Internet of Things (IoT), cyber-physical systems and Big Data in the laboratory environment and generally in the field of biotechnology.
Key research aspects are the next generation of autonomous mobile sensor systems, the computer vision of biological samples and their automatic manipulation as well as problems in the field of laboratory automation.

Projects of the SmartLab systems research group include:
- iPhoto - Development and Test of an automated imaging station for capturing, documentation and analysis of laboratory samples with link to a LIMS
- Smart Translation – Optimizing of diagnostics within the field of personalized oncology through developing an efficient system of analysis to explore, validate and translate new olecular-biological biomarkers and their integration into the SmartLab
- Sens-o-Spheres III - Characterization of new bioreactor systems through position- and time-resolved acquisition of process measurement signals using mobile, miniaturized sensors
- SmartAquaCultureSystems – New energy-optimized recirculation systems with mobile, wireless sensor equipment
- 3Dbot - Development of an high-troughput, bench-top-robotic-system for the fully automated handling of biological samples using a photogrammetric 3D-imaging method and real-time image analysis
