Textile construction
Textile construction is an umbrella term for all constructions heavily involving technical textiles and the semi-finished products manufactured from them. This includes primarily membrane and tent constructions. Textile reinforcements in concrete construction are also become more prevalent in textile construction. The use of textiles in the various fields of construction engineering is focused on areas where lightweight and filigree design is needed, as in free-hanging canopies for soccer stadiums, exhibition halls or shopping malls. This type of construction project usually is centered around high aesthetic aspirations, and the concept of textile architecture is therefore closely connected to textile construction, often to a point of both terms being used interchangeably.
Yarns from high-performance fibers, and the textile constructions made from them are the load-bearing components of textile construction applications, offering extremely high strength and suitability to transfer high tensile forces. Following the force flow path, the familiar membrane or tent shapes come about, with the textile base materials being fitted with textile coatings or impregnations beforehand, optimizing them for the corresponding application.
With the technical possibilities and the know-how of the ITM, the textiles used for textile construction are developed, designed, and realized for their individual applications according to requirement-adapted criteria. The advantages of textile constructions with regard to the almost unlimited possibilities of an individual shaping and coloring are thus fully utilized. A partial translucence of the textiles in the component allows daylight to pass through and offers heat protection. Even in temporary and mobile constructions (so-called temporary buildings), textile constructions are used for their high flexibility and lightweight design.
