General information for the course
The study of Art History is particularly suited to students who are interested in the description, analysis, interpretation and historical classification of works of art as well as biographical studies of important artists as opposed to creating art themselves. Digital art culture is also a key focus area of this course.
Excursions offer students the opportunity to study original artworks, exchange ideas with enthusiasts on location, and explore previously unknown sites or museums under expert guidance. Studying Art History in Dresden is ideal as the city and its surroundings are renowned for their rich and varied museum landscape together with a wealth of significant architectural works from various eras.
Art History can be studied as a 1st or 2nd major in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences degree program.
Study contents
Art History concentrates in particular on European and North American art from the middle ages to the present day. Students of this course can also learn about Latin American and African art. Works of art covered range from architecture, painting, graphic arts and sculpture to photography, film and new media. The teaching also covers the history of materials, artistic techniques, the history of science, and art theory.
This course enables students to understand developments in art history, to classify these within the historical context, and to decipher the levels of meaning in various works of art. Students must have excellent language skills in order to present works of art and art-historical contexts clearly and vividly. Art History is the only subject at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science which can be studied in combination with Architectural Science – with the aim of specializing in this particular field.
The compulsory internship at the end of the program is designed to provide insight into the diverse fields of work open to art history graduates and can be completed in museums, private collections, libraries, archives, auction houses, historic preservation, or in the field of journalism.
