General information for the course
Social Sciences is the name given to an interdisciplinary field of studies that examines the various aspects of social relationships and society. Of the subjects represented at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science, these include Media Research, Political Science and Sociology.
Social Sciences can be studied in the BA in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences in combination with the 1st majors in Media Research, Political Science, and Sociology only. It serves as an extension of the 1st major with content from the other two and/or additional social science subjects (social pedagogy, economics, media computer science, law or psychology [the latter subject to reservation]) and/or to consolidate the content of the 1st major subjects in Political Science or Sociology.
Social Sciences can be studied as a 2nd major in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences degree program. It can only be chosen in combination with a 1st major in Media Research, Political Science or Sociology.
Study contents
The 2nd major in Social Sciences in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences BA program features five elective compulsory fields with a total of 35 credit points. Students select two elective compulsory fields. One is studied in the first half of the program, the other in the second half.
This results in the following options for students to develop their profile:
(1) Concentration on one of the subjects not selected as the 1st major (Media Research, Political Science, or Sociology). In this way, students can study two social sciences subjects as their majors.
(2) Basics from the two subjects not chosen as the 1st(Media Research, Political Science, or Sociology). In this way, students can acquire knowledge of all three subjects.
(3) A broad social sciences profile with content from the two subjects not selected as the 1st major (Media Research, Political Science, or Sociology) in the first half of studies, in addition to an elective compulsory field from social pedagogy, economics, media computer science, law or psychology (the latter subject to reservation).
(4) Specialization in the 1st major subjects of Political Science or Sociology (in the second half of the program). In the first half of the program, students can select either
(a) Content from the two subject not chosen as the 1st major (Media Research, Political Science, or Sociology) or
(b) An elective compulsory field from the area of social pedagogy, economics, media computer science, law or psychology (the latter subject to reservation).
