Saxon Environmental Award: TUD among the finalists
The TU Dresden is one of the finalists of the Saxon Environmental Award. In the category "Environmentally Friendly Corporate Management", it made it into the top three. On 1 July 2019, the award was presented by the Minister of State for the Environment and Agriculture, Thomas Schmidt. With the Saxon Environmental Award, the Free State of Saxony honors outstanding achievements in the protection of the environment and natural resources. Important criteria include the role environmental protection plays in the overall concept of the organisation and how it is lived in everyday life - for example through an environmental management system and the involvement of employees.
"The fact that we are doing so well is a great recognition of our work and the daily commitment of many employees and students," says Kathrin Brömmer, Head of Environmental Management at Technische Universität Dresden. "It shows that we are on the right track. Nevertheless, there is still a lot to be done on the way to a sustainable and environmentally friendly university".
The TU Dresden commits itself both in its mission statement and in its basic rules to devote special attention to environmental protection. Its environmental management system has been certified according to EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) since 2003. It covers, among other things, the areas of energy, mobility, waste and procurement, but also teaching, research and public relations. Since 2017, the "Sustainable Campus" project has been using funds from the SMWK's initiative budget to implement numerous ideas that originated at the university. The student TU environmental initiative (tuuwi) has been committed to environmental protection on campus for 30 years with a variety of projects such as the environmental lecture, tree sponsorships or insect meadows.
One major project is the master plan for the outdoor areas of the TU Dresden campus with a view to its 200th anniversary in 2028 - jointly developed by the Institute for Landscape Architecture, the Institute for Traffic Planning and Traffic, and Directorate 4 Property Management, Technology and Security. The first measures will be implemented this year.
