Development of a green campus
Table of contents
The preservation of biodiversity is a central concern in the development of a future-proof and sustainably designed campus. Various biodiversity-promoting measures are already being implemented with the aim of improving the conditions for animal and plant species. The commitment of each individual is very welcome.
Tree sponsorship initiative
The campus is characterized by an extensive tree population that is very diverse in terms of species and age. Around 80 different tree species are represented on the campus. The existing trees are a valuable historical and ecological asset and deserve a high priority for protection.
Construction and renovation work, as well as the duty to ensure traffic safety, repeatedly lead to the loss of existing trees. The tree sponsorship initiative has been attracting donors for new tree planting since 2018. Since then, numerous sponsored trees have helped to maintain a diverse and liveable campus.
If you would like to support this commitment and become a tree sponsor, you can find information on the Tree Sponsorships on Campus website.
Watering can heroes
To support voluntary watering initiatives in Dresden, Stadtentwässerung Dresden GmbH and the Dresden gießt initiative have launched the joint project - Gießkannenheld:innen Dresden. Green spaces, shrubs and trees are of great importance for a liveable city, but with heat, drought and heavy rainfall events, climate change is increasingly creating critical conditions.
One of the initiative's rainwater storage tanks is located at the König-Bau and can be used by employees and students to water trees, shrubs and green spaces on the main campus. Watering cans are available on site for this purpose.
Detailed information about the initiative and planned watering campaigns on the main campus can be found on the Gießkannenheld:innen website.
Campus bees

Several bee colonies are looked after by employees and those interested in beekeeping on the meadow orchard at the Directorate Facility Management, Bergstraße 69.
Anyone interested in learning more about bees, their keeping, care and the honey harvest is welcome to contact the Environmental Protection group and support the team with the weekly inspections and honey harvest.
Discover biodiversity
A variety of plants and animals can be discovered on campus. Species found in the various open and green spaces have been documented for several years. A selection has been published on the biodiversity website.
