Henry Arnhold became honorary member of TU Dresden Senate
At a ceremony on 25 May 2011 Henry Arnhold was formally presented the award of honorary member of the TU Dresden senate. With this award we wish to pay tribute to his outstanding commitment to TU Dresden.
In his greeting message, the Saxon prime minister, Stanislaw Tillich, brought to mind the commitment of the whole Arnhold family: "It has been the family maxim of the Arnholds for more than a hundred years: I cannot be happy unless other people around me are happy. The Arnholds have always been generous in sharing their affluence thus having done much good, both here in Dresden and – after their humiliating expulsion – also in their new home country – the United States. It is particularly noteworthy that they never forgot their roots in Dresden and Saxony. The Free State of Saxony gained a lot from Henry Arnhold’s commitment to Dresden and from the magnanimity of his ancestors. I would like to thank him and his family very much on behalf of the Saxon State Government."
In cooperation between TU Dresden and the American Academy, Arnhold founded not only the "Dresden Heritage", an association of Dresden citizens for the development of a cosmopolitan, liberal and tolerant society, but also the „Lisa & Heinrich Arnhold Lectures“ which he now revived at the American Academy in Berlin in commemoration of the discussions his parents organised in Dresden's Tiergartenstraße. In addition, Henry Arnhold promoted the close relations between TU Dresden and the highly regarded "The New School for Social Research" in New York. Immediately after the peaceful revolution, he paved the way for TUD students and early career researchers of the humanities, social and cultural studies to go and work at the New York university "The New School". The Rector of TU Dresden, Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, sees this award of honorary member of the senate as a symbol of attachment, great respect and deep gratitude: "We are very glad to welcome Henry Arnhold as a member of our university by bestowing the honorary title of senator to him. We express our gratitude and hope at the same time that there will be many more joint activities and that Henry Arnhold will be our mentor and role model for bringing together science and the industry and also for maintaining cultural relations across continents, political systems and the centuries for the prosperity of TU Dresden and its partners."
Henry Arnhold is not only involved in the fortunes of the university but also of the city of Dresden, for example he supported the reconstruction of the Church of Our Lady, the renewal of the public swimming pool named after Georg Arnhold and the erection of the synagogue not just financially but also through his enthusiasm.
