Coveted alumni: TU Dresden is the only university in Eastern Germany with multiple top scores in the current Wirtschaftwoche ranking
“TU Dresden is a rare gem of higher education in eastern Germany,” was the praise given by Wirtschaftswoche in its latest issue. TU Dresden graduates of Business Information Systems, Economics and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science degree programs are particularly sought-after by companies.
This is confirmed by Wirtschaftwoche’s latest published ranking. Between February and March 2022, the German business news magazine surveyed 500 human resources managers from companies with ten to one thousand employees, asking which universities they prefer to recruit from and what they look for.
In its many years of conducting these surveys, Wirtschaftswoche has determined that the universities in former East Germany still stand in the shadow of their western counterparts.
And yet, amongst the academic strongholds of Munich, Berlin, Bonn and Heidelberg, TU Dresden has made a name for itself, being ranked at multiple top positions. It is the fourth most popular university for Business Information Systems and ranked fifth for Economics and Engineering. TU Dresden is in seventh place in Electrical Engineering, and eighth in Computer Science.
A key reason for this success are the copious businesses that have settled in Dresden which work to advance research and development, particularly in the area of microelectronics – ideal conditions for recent graduates entering the workforce. A strong economy is therefore a decisive factor in the ranking. The analysis shows that if there is lack of large businesses, recruiters take less note of graduates from that city.
Of course, TU Dresden takes advantage of this enormous benefit. “We at the university have close ties with commerce,” says Rector Prof. Ursula M. Staudinger, who herself maintains close contact with the managing directors of many companies large and small in the region. “The HR representatives know us.” Its outstanding focus on research and additional funding afforded by its status as the only University of Excellence in eastern Germany grant TU Dresden the optimal conditions for bolstering its strengths and scoring well with local enterprises.
Wirtschaftswoche publishes its ranking annually. Its focus on career opportunities for recent university graduates is a unique selling point. The bottom line this year: “How popular university graduates are on the labor market doesn’t just depend on their grades or how quickly they completed their credits. Recruiters from large and small companies alike now place much more value than before on students’ social commitment and activities they pursue in addition to their studies.
