A stirring start to the semester at TU Dresden: Matriculation ceremony marks the start of a new phase of life for over 6,600 first semester students
"Cosmopolitan and committed" – this is the underlying message as we begin the new academic year at TU Dresden today, October 10, 2024. So far, more than 6,600 young people have chosen to take the next step in their academic careers at TUD and have therefore been invited to the matriculation ceremony in the Auditorium Center. Amongst the first-year students, we have around 1,600 international students joining us from 86 nations – with the highest numbers hailing from India, China and Turkey. As students are still able to enroll until the end of the month, we will only be able to give the final figures to the State Office for Statistics on November 1.
"We are very pleased that, contrary to the national trend, we were once again able to slightly increase both the total number of first-semester students and the total number of new international students this year. This is a testament to the appeal of TUD – both the institution and its degree programs – which extends well beyond the borders of the state," says Prof. Ursula Staudinger, Rector of TUD.
“Our motto of 'cosmopolitan and committed' is not only limited to our matriculation ceremony. These are also the values that we actively put into practice every day here at our university," says Prof. Roswitha Böhm, Vice-Rector University Culture at TUD. This is reflected in unique programs such as the "TUD Global Citizenship Certificate," where TUD demonstrates its wholehearted commitment to educating young people in an international environment to become global citizens. The program is aimed at all TUD students – including doctoral and exchange students. The certificate recognizes intercultural, regional and global knowledge, as well as the skills and commitment of the participants.
On a different note, students can get involved in the Green Office, which is TUD's central point of contact for all concerns, suggestions and questions relating to sustainable development. Here you can become a sustainability ambassador, network with others during the Sustainable Coffee Hour, work together on ideas for environmental protection during the Climate Challenge seminar, or get broken appliances back in working order at the RepairCafé.
The motto of the ceremony also reflects the range of courses we have on offer, which will this year be supplemented by the English-language Master's degree course "Water Security and Global Change." The Master's degree program is a joint venture organized by TUD, RWTH Aachen University and IIT Madras, which trains students to become international experts on one of the most pressing issues of the future: Securing a reliable supply of water under increasingly extreme conditions. In the future, UNU Flores and AIT Bangkok will be integrated into the curriculum as partner institutions. There are also other lighthouse projects, such as the Semiconductor Talent Incubation Program Taiwan (STIPT).
This means that prospective students of TUD can currently choose from 119 degree programs, which include Bachelor's, Master's or Diplom degrees. Of these, 26 Master's degree programs can be studied entirely in English, making them particularly attractive for international students.
