Statement by the Senate, the University Executive Board, the Personnel Representation Council and Student Council of TU Dresden on the upcoming state elections and current political developments

TU Dresden has announced its fervent support for cosmopolitanism, tolerance, dignity and respect on numerous occasions in recent years. These fundamental values of coexistence in a democratic society are also indispensable for excellence in research and teaching. As a university, our doors are open to people from all over the world. We warmly welcome international students and researchers to our university, regardless of their background, religion, sexual orientation or lifestyle choices. The freedom of academia, art and culture is a prerequisite for the sustainable and peaceful development of our society. 

We expect such a cosmopolitan and tolerant environment not only on our campus but also in the city of Dresden and throughout the entire state of Saxony. Unless we make a conscious commitment to these fundamental values in word and deed, the polarisation of our society in Saxony will continue and the state’s reputation will be further tarnished both nationally and internationally. Students, scientists, skilled workers and companies will leave the state, or will even avoid it in the first place. This would also entail job losses.

We therefore call upon all members of the university, all citizens of Dresden and the state, and all local and regional politicians to demonstrate even greater commitment to an open and anti-discriminatory society and to stand up for the fundamental values of a free, democratic and open society!

Erich Kästner once said: "All absurdity that occurs is not only the fault of those who commit it, but also of those who do not prevent it." Today, this message is more important than ever before!

With the upcoming state elections in mind, we call upon all voters to consider the platforms of the individual parties: Read the programmes and do not allow freedom of speech, science, art and the media to be infringed upon! I urge you to prevent the jeopardisation of democracy and any threats to the rule of law!
