A glimpse into research and the promotion of early-career researchers: Particle physicist Michael Kobel takes over Real Scientists Twitter page
For this week, particle physicist Prof. Michael Kobel of TUD Dresden University of Technology will take over the German-language Twitter page, Real Scientists DE. During the takeover, he will provide insights into research on the fundamental laws of our universe and tweet about topics such as science communication, fundamental research as a cultural asset, participation and the promotion of early-career researchers.
Kobel has been teaching and researching as the Chair of Particle Physics at TU Dresden since 2006. He leads a research group that investigates extremely rare scattering processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva, in which the Higgs particle acts as a kind of “shock absorber.” He is the initiator and head of the Netzwerk Teilchenwelt (particle world network), in which young people and teachers throughout Germany explore the world of quarks, electrons and the like using original CERN data.
During his Twitter page takeover, he will present his research and the significance of particle physics for both fundamental research and technology development. Kobel will also share his experience in science communication and demonstrate how researchers can engage in dialogue with the public.
Moreover, he will write about promoting young talent in physics, in particular how to get young people excited about scientific research while they are still at school. Followers can also expect insights into the CERN Summer School teacher training course, which he is running this week.
About Real Scientists DE
Real Scientists DE, the German-language offshoot of Real Scientists, is a home for researchers, science journalists, bloggers, authors, lab rats and science fans. The initiative enables them to present their research to a broad audience on Twitter. Every week, the page is taken over by new researchers.
About Michael Kobel
Michael Kobel studied physics, did his doctorate at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and received his habilitation at the University of Freiburg. Since 2006, he has been a professor of experimental particle physics at TU Dresden. For many years, he has been committed to the comprehensible and authentic communication of knowledge about the structure and origin of our universe, including in the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG), which he chaired from 2009 to 2012. Since March 2021, Michael Kobel has served as Vice-Rector Academic Affairs at TU Dresden and is responsible for the organization and quality assurance of the educational programs at TU Dresden as well as for its school cooperations and programs for pupils.
