Election of the new Rector: Two female and one male candidate for the office of Rector will introduce themselves at the university
On 10th March 2020, TU Dresden’s Senate has confirmed three candidates to stand in the election of a new Rector. In accordance with the Saxon Freedom of Higher Education Act, this nomination was prepared by the University Council in consultation with the Senate. The successor for incumbent Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen will be elected by TU Dresden’s Extended Senate on 17th March 2020 for a five-year term of office.
These are the candidates for the office of Rector (in alphabetical order):
- Prof. Dr. Simone Fulda is a physician and currently holds the positions of Vice President for Research and Academic Infrastructure at the Goethe University Frankfurt, Director of the Institute for Experimental Tumour Research in Paediatrics and University Professor for Experimental Tumour Research at the University Hospital Frankfurt. She is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and has been a member of the German Council of Science and Humanities from 2012 until 2018.
- Prof. Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert has been a chemist at the University of Jena since 2007 and held several appointments at renowned universities both in Germany and abroad. He is the founder and director of two research centres, a major contributor to numerous CRCs and the “Microverse” Cluster of Excellence, a non-resident member of the Max Planck Society, and “Higher Education Lecturer of the Year 2019”.
- Prof. Dr. Ursula M. Staudinger is a psychologist and ageing researcher. She is a tenured Professor for Sociomedical Sciences at the Columbia Aging Center of the Columbia University in New York, which she has founded in 2013. She is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina where she has served as Vice President from 2007 until 2017. From 1999 until 2003, she was a professor at TU Dresden.
The Chairwoman of the University Council, Gunda Röstel, is convinced that it is a truly high-calibre list of candidates. "I am deeply grateful that the University Council, in consultation with the Senate, has succeeded in nominating three internationally renowned personalities from the world of science to stand in the election.” At the same time, she encourages all members of staff and students of TU Dresden to attend the three presentations by the candidates in the coming days.

- 16th March: Prof. Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert
The presentations will take place from 10am to 12 noon in the Schönfeld auditorium in the Barkhausen Building and are open to members of the university.
The election of the new Rector by the Extended Senate will take place on 17th March from 1pm in the ballroom of the Rectorate building and is also open to members of the university. TU Dresden’s Press Office shall inform about the election results as soon as they become available.
