TUD Rector Professor Hans Müller-Steinhagen elected for a second term
TU Dresden's extended senate re-elected on 13 May 2015
Professor Hans Müller-Steinhagen as rector for the 2015 - 2020
term. His second term will begin on 18 August 2015.
Whilst development at the TU Dresden was essentially focused on
scientific aspects in the last few years, not least thanks to
the Excellence Initiative of the German Federation and the
Federal States, Professor Müller-Steinhagen has named clearly
enhancing teaching as one of the priority tasks for his second
term in office. This particularly includes teaching
organisation. He considers other important goals to be
developing the TUD as a comprehensive university, improving the
employment relationship for mid-level academics, further
internationalisation and successful application to the next
round of the Excellence Initiative. Müller-Steinhagen is also
aiming to strengthen TU Dresden's corporate identity. "I hope
that all members of the university are proud to be a part of
this university, that we all pull together so that the TUD
continues to develop its different facets as ONE university.
This shared spirit was the recipe to our success when applying
as a University of Excellence and I hope that in future it will
also be the hallmark of the TU Dresden!"
In coordination with the TUD senate, the university council
proposed two candidates for election to the extended senate.
The chair of the university council, Gunda Röstel, emphasised
the deep respect for the work that Professor Müller-Steinhagen
has achieved thus far: “We are pleased that Professor
Müller-Steinhagen is undertaking a second term in office with
the backing of the university council, the senate and the
extended senate. He is the first choice for continued success,
scientific excellence, good teaching and for representing one
of the most important universities in Germany.”
Professor Hans Müller Steinhagen (61) graduated in 1980 with a
degree in mechanical engineering from the University of
Karlsruhe. Four years later, he gained his doctorate there in
process engineering. In 1999, he qualified as a university
lecturer in the area of applied thermodynamics at the
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Afterwards, he worked for a
total of 17 years in foreign universities. He was director of
the Institute for Thermodynamics and Thermal Engineering at the
University of Stuttgart from 2000 to 2010 and director of the
Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace
Centre (DLR). He has an honorary doctorate from the Brno
University of Technology in the Czech Republic and Dankook
University in South Korea. Furthermore, he is the chair of the
State Rectors' Conference in Saxony (LRK). In 2014, he was
chosen as University Manager of the Year by CHE and the weekly
newspaper DIE ZEIT.
