Sporting synergy: Dresden University Sports Center teams up with Dynamo Dresden
The Dresden University Sports Center (DHSZ) and SG Dynamo (SGD) Dresden have decided to partner up to put more emphasis on exercise in Dresden and establish the state capital as a vibrant and liveable metropolis that stretches far beyond its borders.
Every year, the DHSZ offers numerous courses in over 50 types of sports for staff, students and families at TUD and Dresden’s other universities. Marko Schimke, Chairman of the Board of the Dresden University Sports Center: "As a central facility for all of Dresden’s universities and the scientific institutions in and around Dresden, we offer all of members the opportunity to get involved in sports courses — before, during or after their day of lectures or work. In these fast-paced and hectic times, we want to put more emphasis on the opportunity to participate in a balanced and varied exercise program, which will help to maintain health and promote cross-institutional exchange."
The partnership with Dynamo Dresden entails mutual promotion and support for the respective clubs and institutions. Examples of this include practical partnerships for final theses and research projects as well as scientific support for projects by students or lecturers from the universities affiliated with the DHSZ.
Jan Gerken, Chancellor of TUD Dresden University of Technology: "As the central sponsor of the Dresden University Sports Center, we strive to offer staff and students a wide range of exercise opportunities that not only promote health, but also encourage interdisciplinary exchange. The partnership with SGD, the largest club in the state capital, effectively expands this network to include a strong sporting player in the city. I am delighted that we are working closely together to develop university sports in Dresden, inspire students to take part in team sports and actively bridge the gap between science and elite sports."
The DHSZ's partners include a number of groups involved in Dresden's top-class sporting scene, such as the Olympiastützpunkt Sachsen, HC Elbflorenz, the Dresden Titans, the Dresden Monarchs and VC Olympia Dresden. Dynamo fits seamlessly into this roster. David Fischer, Managing Director Communications at Dynamo, says: "Our mission statement highlights this in the second sentence: Dynamo is Dresden, Dresden is Dynamo. The fact that our city boasts 40,000 students shows just how popular it is for studying in Germany. We are therefore all the more pleased about the cooperation with the DHSZ, which, like us, is trying to bring sports and exercise closer to the people living here. Thanks to our unified efforts, we can now promote the location even better, together."
The cooperation agreement was signed on February 28, 2025 with Mirko Schimke, Dynamo's Managing Director David Fischer and TUD Chancellor Jan Gerken all in attendance.
