Times Higher Education Sustainability Ranking: TU Dresden distinguished as one of the world’s best universities in industry, innovation and infrastructure
Sustainability has become a major factor in international university rankings. Based on the United Nations’ 17 global sustainability goals, the renowned British magazine Times Higher Education has examined universities’ track record in this category for its “THE Impact Ranking” every year since 2019. The universities are evaluated based on their commitment to realizing these goals, for instance through research projects, industry cooperation, knowledge transfer to society and individual degree programs.
TU Dresden took part in the ranking for the first time this year and was immediately ranked among the world’s top ten percent of universities owing to its contributions to sustainability in industry, innovation and infrastructure. Of the 785 universities evaluated in this category, TUD placed 72.
In the category of “industry, innovation and infrastructure,” research performance is ranked based on areas that are considered significant for sustainably effective innovations. It evaluates how often research at TU Dresden is cited in patents, how many start-ups emerge and how much third-party research funding the universities receive from industry. Overall, TU Dresden received 90 out of a possible 100 points in this category.
The internationally outstanding rating supports TU Dresden’s multiple award-winning research, third-party funding and transfer success. For example, the 2021 “German Start-up Monitor” lauds the cities of Dresden and Leipzig as being very dynamic start-up locations, which is primarily due to the exceptional research landscape.
The Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking
The annual Times Higher Education Rankings include the global overall, subject-specific and reputation rankings, three regional rankings (Asia, Latin America, as well as BRICS & emerging nations), and, since 2019, the THE Impact Rankings, which are compiled using different indicators and weightings. THE rankings are amongst the most widely followed university rankings, alongside the Academic Ranking of World Universities and the QS World University Rankings.
In 2022, 1524 universities took part in the THE Impact Ranking. 1406 participated in the overall ranking. The remaining universities, like TU Dresden, were only assessed with regard to a singular Sustainable Development Goal. The number of participants continues to grow rapidly.
