TUD Lectures+ “Isolation or integration? Is European migration policy dividing us?”
European migration policy has increasingly become the center point of social and political debate. How does balancing humanitarian responsibility and strict border controls affect social cohesion and the integration of refugees in their new home countries?
Can we continue to look on as people are mistreated, tortured and overlooked at the EU border or in their home countries due to European entry regulations or inaction within our community of values? How should we approach the topic of migration against the backdrop of increasingly heated political and societal debate in Saxony and Dresden? Is the reputation of Dresden and Saxony really so bad or can we find a spark of hope and solidarity in medicine?
Two experts discuss questions of dignity and responsibility against the backdrop of current migration policy with Hanaa Hakiki and Dr. Martin Bortz. Hakiki is a lawyer at the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights e. V. in Berlin , where she is responsible for issues relating to border justice. Martin Bortz works on global health at the University Hospital Dresden and is a member of Doctors without Borders. Both approach the topic of migration not as politicians, but rather from their professional perspectives: as a lawyer and as a doctor, both of whom also feel committed to overarching humanitarian and legal principles.
The TUD Lecture+ will be moderated by Prof. Nicole Vögele, who teaches Moving Image at Dresden University of Fine Arts and specializes in investigative journalism. As an award-winning filmmaker, she presented her latest documentary in spring, which has already won numerous prizes: The Landscape and the Fury is an impressive portrayal of how European history in the former Yugoslavia of the 1990s connects with today's refugee patterns.
