And what about Excel?
In consultations, we are regularly confronted with the question of whether Excel is suitable for Research Data Management (RDM).
The classic answer here is: it depends. In principle, there is no harm in using Excel for RDM. Many research projects would not be possible without Excel. However, the same rules apply to Excel as to RDM in general; a research group needs a clear concept for the use of Excel, i.e. a few clear rules and personnel responsibilities.
If such a concept does not exist, Excel quickly becomes a black hole in which research data disappears never to be seen again. Once created, Excel folders tend to grow “organically” over the years. The logic of this kind of data management then becomes difficult for new members of staff to understand - not to mention the ongoing maintenance of these documents.
And now the good news: we know from past projects that the optimization potential of Excel documents can be considerable. Merging and streamlining them usually makes them easier to use and enables their analysis potential to be fully exploited.
