International partnerships, networks and programs of schools and faculties
The decentralized partnerships, networks and programs selected here comprise international relations and activities with TUD-wide significance. They are located in the Schools and Faculties and are characterized by subject-specific orientation. As "lighthouses", they shine a light on the quality, breadth and diversity of TU Dresden in internationalization.
Appointments to "lighthouse" status are evaluated and reassigned periodically by the International Affairs Commission of TU Dresden.
In the first selection process in 2021, a total of 22 initiatives were awarded for their valuable contribution to the international position of TU Dresden, and distinguished in five categories:

Partnerships
This category includes established partnerships involving several Institutes or Faculties, offering joint degrees for students and doctoral candidates, intensive research collaboration, and joint projects and events. They are of high value because they ensure ongoing international networking, not least for young scientists.
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences at TU Dresden maintains an intensive, long-standing university partnership with the University of Trento. The cooperation includes a joint double degree Master's program in European Languages Literature and Culture in Social Change, sociology, Philosophy, History and Art History as well as the doctoral program for joint doctoral studies, which is linked to the international doctoral school "Forme dello scambio culturale/Forms of Cultural Transfer" of the University of Trento. Furthermore, summer language courses for TU Dresden students of all disciplines as well as joint scientific events (summer schools, workshops, conferences) take place regularly. further information
The strategic partnership between the Faculty of Medicine at TU Dresden and Flinders University in Adelaide has been established since 2014. On the one hand, the partnership includes the mutual exchange of students in their practical year, in which the participants benefit from the different forms of patient care. On the other hand, there is intensive cooperation in research as well as a regular exchange on an administrative level to optimize framework conditions. Flinders University has a great international reputation and expertise in research on curriculum development and medical didactics. Furthermore, Flinders University was involved in the creation and further development of the International Summer School on Technology Transfer in Life Sciences, which takes place annually in Dresden. further information

The cooperation agreement between TU Dresden and Tongji University was signed in 1998. Tongji University is one of the oldest and most renowned universities in China and occupies top positions in international rankings, especially in engineering sciences. Since 2015, the universities have maintained the double degree program "Post-Gradual Studies in Mechanical Engineering". In addition to cooperation in teaching, the past 20 years have seen many further activities, such as joint research projects and publications, events and, most recently, the DFG-funded "Sino-German Composium on Smart Compliant Mechanism". further information

The Stellenbosch University (South Africa) – one of South Africa's leading universities with an excellent reputation worldwide – is an important partner of the School of Science and the Center for Teacher Education and Educational Research. For both sides, this partnership has great strategic relevance beyond mere mobilities.
The research-related stays of the Phd students aim at working on qualification projects under mutual professorial supervision and form a basis for further cooperation activities and their inter-institutional continuation.
The digital appearances and, in some cases, stays by university teachers are embedded in different teaching formats, with the approach of tandem teaching (joint teaching by guest and host) being tested. Students from both universities can complete these.
The exchange of non-scientific staff helps to launch the collaboration on important current topics such as Big Data, governance and monitoring strategic internationalization.
The regular exchange between both universities promotes the sustainable development of the partnership.

The partnership between TU Dresden and the University of Usti nad Labem has an important social impact in the German-Czech border region. It deals with the challenges of post-socialist societies and the transformation to a strong civic culture.
The partnership is developed, among other things, through reciprocal teaching-research seminars. In summer semester 2021, German-Czech student groups were taught together for the first time. In addition, "CouReg" is a joint research project with other non-university partners to promote democracy and civil courage in the border region. Students from both universities as well as pupils from grades 7 to 10 in both countries are involved in this project.
The cooperation with the University of Usti nad Labem is also characterized by projects in other areas, such as sustainable urban mobility (Institute of Transport Planning and Road Traffic) or the cross-border development of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland (Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing). further information

International network with outstanding TUD participation
In this category, TUD institutes or faculties collaborate with international networks which are renowned for their innovative and pioneering research. In these networks with partners from allover the world, TUD members are actively involved and make an outstanding contribution to the respective research area.
The Institute of Clinical Chemistry of the TU Dresden is represented in the International Trained Immunity (INTRIM) consortium. The consortium researches the new immunological principle of memory of the innate immune system. This process is also known as "trained immunity." It involves long-lived adaptation mechanisms in cells of the innate immune system. INTRIM is thus making a significant contribution to research into new strategies for improving the understanding and treatment of diseases. further information

The Global Platform for the Prevention of Autoimmune Diabetes (GPPAD) was launched in 2015 and brings together several academic research institutions and hospitals in Europe. GPPAD aims to establish an international infrastructure for studies dedicated to preventing the development of type 1 diabetes.
The medical faculty of the TUD, in cooperation with the pediatric clinic of the University Hospital Dresden, contributes significantly to this innovation. For example, genetic risk assessments have been developed that are used to identify infants at high risk for type 1 diabetes as part of population-based newborn screening. further information
From Feb. 27 - Mar. 21, 2023 the GPPAD, in collaboration with the Helmholtz Munich Institute for Diabetes Research (IDF), brought autoimmune (type 1) diabetes among children into public focus. The 3-week awareness campaign K1DS ARE HEROES focused on children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes, helping researchers to inform about the disease. Together with the IDF, GPPAD targeted public awareness of the most common metabolic disease among children on more than 2,000 posters (in Dresden, Munich, Hanover), 750 Infoscreens (in 18 German metropolitan areas) and social media. The higher public attention to this topic was used to provide information about the possibilities for detection in early childhood (Fr1da early detection program) and prevention.

Center of the OncoRay research building is an innovative proton therapy facility. In addition to patient treatment, OncoRay scientists can research and improve the use of protons in cancer therapy. For this purpose, the proton beam is guided into an experimental room via a separate beamline. Whenever the proton beam is not needed for patient irradiation, it can be used to further investigate the biological effects of the particles in vitro or in vivo, as well as physical-technical issues.
Through different research areas in medicine, physics, biology and informatics and through the direct connection to the Clinic and Polyclinic for Radiotherapy and Radiooncology OncoRay offers researchers an almost unique interdisciplinarity. In the field of particle therapy, the physicians and scientists are closely connected with other European particle centers in the European Particle Therapy Network (EPTN) and act as coordinators in various work packages. In addition, the physicians and scientists are involved in numerous EU projects (e.g. INSPIRE, PROTECT-Trial, RAPTOR), in which proton therapy is the main focus. further information

Astronauts Matthias Maurer and Alexander Gerst train with MetabolicSpace from TU Dresden.
The Institute of Aerospace Engineering at TU Dresden conducts experiments in free space on its own satellite SOMP2b. Astronauts also train with MetabolicSpace on the International Space Station ISS. Thus, the TU Dresden and its students have access to their own satellite in space.
An important component of this research network has been TUD’s first MSCA doctoral network ASCenSIon. This project concluded with an international conference at TU Dresden in September 2023 with around 100 participants from science and industry. The specialist lectures (with a total of 60 technical presentations) dealt with the further development of space access options from various perspectives. The pressing issues of space debris and clean space were addressed in a particularly impressive way.
In stimulating panel discussions, the participants also exchanged views on future-oriented key topics such as doctoral training, sustainable access to space, start-up companies for launch vehicles, environmentally friendly propulsion systems and innovative training for doctoral networks. The connections that have been made and knowledge that has been shared during the conference will have a lasting impact on space research and the education of young scientists in this field. Since 1990, the Rolls-Royce Group - one of the world's leading manufacturers of propulsion systems for civil aviation and land- and sea-based mobility - has built up a global research and development network of 29 University Technology Centres (UTC). Each UTC focuses on a key technology to improve Roll-Royce propulsion systems of the future. The UTC "Lightweight Structures and Materials and Robust Design" established at the TU Dresden acts as a driving force in the field of lightweight system construction, multi-material design and robust design and pursues the goal of transferring fundamental results from university research into industrial practice at Rolls-Royce. In vocational and continuing education, TU Dresden is present in international professional networks on two levels: in policy consulting and in the development of curricula for and with international partners.
The Institute of Vocational Education and Vocational Didactics develops policy recommendations for general, higher, vocational and in-company continuing education, mostly within the framework of international research commissions or research networks, for example on behalf of the EU Parliament or the OECD.
Furthermore, several Chairs at the Institute of Vocational Education and Vocational Didactics are leading the development of curricula for (vocational) teacher education worldwide. These activities are funded by international clients such as the EU, the GIZ and authorities in the target countries. Partly, joint postgraduate courses are implemented.

Local network with international radiance
These networks are built around Dresden research institutes and have a high international impact in their respective research fields.
The Innovative Research on Structural Engineering network focuses on the research areas Digital Concrete Technologies and Enhanced Structural Impact Safety.
Digital Concrete Technologies represent a promising approach to solving the challenges of the construction industry. Through the digitalization and automation of relevant manufacturing processes, higher productivity, resource efficiency, and improved working conditions can be achieved. TU Dresden has been conducting research in the field of digital manufacturing with concrete since as early as 2014. Pioneering work in this area includes, for example, CONPrint3D, a construction process for 3D forming of fresh concrete, which was awarded the BAUMA 2016 prize in the category "Research". In addition, there are numerous national and international research projects. The researchers at TU Dresden stand out internationally for their innovative approaches and are also among the world's leaders in terms of publication output. Activities in basic research have been concentrated since 2018 in the SPP 2005 OPUS FLUIDUM FUTURUM - Rheology of reactive, multiscale, multiphase construction materials.

Existing structures made of concrete or reinforced concrete usually have a relatively low resistance to short-term dynamic loads such as impact, detonation or earthquakes. Researchers at TU Dresden are conducting top-level research in the field of sustainable construction of new structures that are highly resistant to impact loads. Since 2017, GRK 2250 Impact resistance of building structures by mineral-bonded composites has been effective. The world's leading experts associated with the GRK attest to the College's excellent quality and great added value through interdisciplinary, synergistic research.

Simulation of the impact on a concrete slab
The research network Advanced Computational Engineering deals with current developments in virtualization and digitization in engineering, especially in civil engineering. The network is characterized by interdisciplinary top-level research, such as the Collaborative Research Center SFB/TRR 339 "Digital Twin Road", as well as international networking with renowned partners, such as Columbia University, Tsinghua University or the Harbin Institute of Technology. Furthermore, an extremely successful Master's program Advanced Computational and Civil Engineering Structural Studies (ACCESS) is offered, which provides in-depth knowledge in the field of innovative computer-aided methods for modeling, design, analysis and strengthening of structures in civil engineering.

On September 28, 2022, history was made at the TU Dresden: The opening of the world's first carbon concrete building, CUBE, launched nothing less than a new era in construction. Carbon concrete is a combination of high-performance concrete and carbon fibers, which are processed into a scrim or a bar and serve as reinforcement. The very low use of concrete and the significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional reinforced concrete construction methods, make carbon concrete a highly promising building material for the future.
The TU Dresden, with its Faculty of Civil Engineering, is recognized worldwide as a leading research institution in the field of carbon concrete, including its transfer to industry. Under the umbrella of C³ - Carbon Concrete Composite e.V., up to 226 companies, institutions and associations have worked interdisciplinarily on the successful introduction of carbon concrete as a material to the market since 2014. The Mercator Forum for Migration and Democracy (MIDEM) asks how migration impacts democratic policies, institutions and cultures and, at the same time, is impacted by them. Forms, instruments and the political processing of migration in democratic societies are examined – in individual countries and in a comparative view of Europe. The Forum works closely with its partners in Europe and the USA, such as the European University Institute Florence and the New School for Social Research NY.
Central aspects of the research project are the perception of migration by democratic societies, the social fault lines that become visible as a result, and potential coping strategies.

The International Center for Computational Logic (ICCL) is an association of (currently 6) research groups at TU Dresden, which has been in existence since 2003. Its research at an international top level is concerned with the foundations and applications of formal logic in computer science. The focus ranges from algebraic foundations to knowledge representation, formal methods, declarative problem solving, and a variety of other artificial intelligence applications. By concentrating on symbolic methods, the approaches and methods developed at the ICCL are characterized by a high level of explainability.

The ICCL has a large overlap in content and personnel with the DFG Research Training Group Quantitative Logics and Automata (QuantLA). The goal of QuantLA is to investigate quantitative logics and automata as well as their mutual relations using methods of theoretical computer science. Possible application areas are verification, knowledge representation and constraint solving, but also natural language processing.

National Networks
These networks are characterized by uniting several university and non-university institutions on one or more topics in a specific country. Moreover, they have a well-established cooperation in several areas such as research, student exchange or technology transfer.
In 2014, Osaka University was declared a strategic partner of the School of Science, TU Dresden. Since then, Japanese and Dresden scientists have generated a large number of joint activities, also beyond the borders of Osaka and the Kansai Region. In the meantime, about 20 universities and research institutes from several regions of Japan have been included in the multifaceted collaboration strands. Institutes from the DRESDEN-concept alliance are also integrated in the joint projects developed at the faculties of TU Dresden, especially the Helmholtz Centre Dresden Rossendorf. As the variety of formats suggests, all relevant academic target groups are included in the partnership work: students, teachers, researchers and administrative staff. With a view to future activities, this sets the course for continuity, sustainability and commitment on both sides.
A significant instrument of networking and partnership development is the interdisciplinary symposium iJaDe, which takes place every three years, alternately in Dresden and in Japan.

The partnership network links leading research institutions in Germany and the Republic of Korea. These include, among others, the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology at TU Dresden, the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS), the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and Inha University Incheon. The cooperation is characterized by a long-standing and intensive collaboration with joint events, student and scientist exchange as well as a strongly transfer-oriented research collaboration in the field of development of carbon fibers, hybrid composites, lightweight construction methods and calculation and validation methods. In addition, the partnership includes a comprehensive multiplier network with a close network of non-university institutions, both from industry and from politics and public administration.

The selected educational programs offer particular courses and training for specific target groups, which create a strong international visibility and thus increase the appeal of our university.
The Centre for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management (CIPSEM) is an institution of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. Since 1977 it has ensured the worldwide visibility of the TU Dresden and a strong bond with its alumni. The postgraduate course offerings are designed for international environmental professionals preparing for leadership roles within ministries and agencies, as well as local governmental and non-governmental organizations in their home countries, where they actively assume planning, coordination, and management responsibilities. In cooperation with its partner organizations UNEP, UNESCO and BMU, CIPSEM contributes to capacity building in the field of sustainable development and use of natural resources in developing and emerging countries through the targeted training of persons with future decision-making responsibilities. further information

The Center for International Studies (ZIS) has been established in January 2002 as a Central Academic Unit of TU Dresden. ZIS offers a consecutive Bachelor's/Master's program in the field of International Relations with an interdisciplinary spectrum of subjects in political science, law, and economics. The study of the core subjects International Politics, International Economics and International Law is complemented by genuinely interdisciplinary modules. A dense network of European and non-European cooperation universities as well as integrated training in two modern foreign languages are available for the obligatory semester abroad. In addition, ZIS maintains a successful alumni program to support current students (mentoring).

Central European Campus Neisse/Nisa is a joint Master's program in the field of International Management offered by International Institute (IHI) Zittau and TU Liberec. Students choose modules of at least 30 ECTS at one of the campuses, commute between them because they are just an hour away by train and streetcar, and receive a double degree at the end. Studying at the Central European Campus is Europe in permanent mode. further information

Within the framework of the International Particle Physics Masterclasses, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in current physics research for one day. The program was launched in 2005 and is coordinated at TU Dresden. It takes place once a year at 220 research institutions in 60 countries worldwide - from Egypt to Cyprus.
